Fedora Internet?

Posted 14 July 2011 - 07:49 AM

Well I was just installing fedora on my hard drive because I really liked it and I was going to go install my broadcom wireless chip drivers when I couldn't get internet via ethernet. It was weird because it worked perfectly fine when I did that with ubuntu. It kept on trying to connect but then after about thirty seconds it wouldn't. Anybody have a clue why? BTW I have a dell inspiron 14.

That's odd, Linux OS's are known for compatibility.
To make the issue a bit clearer, is the Ethernet connection at least recognized?

EDIT: I'm assuming it's recognized since it at least attempted to connect. Would you mind giving some more specifications (is it a Dell Inspiron 14R Laptop)? If so find a nearby computer with internet and go here. Download the drivers onto a USB and install manually.

I've been fighting a fedora install all morning. When they say minimal, they ain't kidding. I'm still not sure what udev rule is jerking me around, but I'm going to have to live with it for now.

Right, the magic command is ifconfig. If you see it there, you're not doing so bad. You probably want DHCP?

You can get a list of your network devices, even if they aren't showing up, with ls /sys/class/net.

It's possible you setup is fine, but just didn't want to start on boot ( don't ask me why ). You can manually fire one up with ifconfig devicename up. However, if your configuration is setup to be not read on boot, that actually won't help.

Um, right, first did you see the thing?

What kind of network are you trying to access? I know that my school uses a WPA2 Enterprise, which requires certificates that don't come with Fedora by default. If you just can't connect to any wifi network, then idk

The encryption type doesn't matter when connecting via Ethernet. There's an internal problem. Try following what baavgai said.

Ok what happens, is that I plugin my ethernet cord and it recognizes it and shows it and then it tries to connect but after about thirty seconds it just stops. I'm going to check the console now to see if it says anything. (I think I can do that lol, still a little noob-ish at linux).

Ok this is weird... I went back to the router and modem to get the console report which was something that my mind made up... But anyways this time instead of trying to plug a seperate ethernet cord into my router I plugged the ethernet from my modem that was going into my router into my computer and instead of last time it actually worked and I'm on it now actually. I'm updating my repos now to install the broadcom drivers and it looks good from here on out. Hopefully this will be one of the last times I need help with linux. I got a book on it recently and hopefully I can migrate to it which I've been wanting to do. Windows has been messing up a LOT for me recently.

Anyways thanks a ton guys!

UPDATE 2: Ok got my wireless working! Yay!

Thank you very much good sir! It was really odd how it worked for the direct modem cable but not when coming out of my router.
