Boot errors

Posted 16 July 2011 - 08:32 AM

I installed windows updates on my hp laptop a few days ago and after reboot I got a BSOD stating there was a page fault in a non paged area. I cannot boot into safe mode, flash drive, CD/DVD drive without this screen restricting access to my hard drive. I have even tried to access the drive by installing on another laptop, but no luck. I did boot to hirens boot cd on the other unit and accessed view of the drive files, but they were preceded by a $ symbol and read only. I have had no problems with my HP til the updates. I am holding Microsoft responsible, as I have read of others experiencing the same problem. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me restore disks for Vista, but again I cannot boot from optical drive. This is becoming a nightmare and I will regret losing my data in the event It becomes necessary to re-partition and format the drive. If anyone has a suggestion....just short of attaching Bill Gates income....lol, I would be appreciative. I have several years experience in hardware and software installations and repair, but this is elusive for me. Thanks again to any and all who may shed the light of life for my HDD.

Christopher

Even when I try booting to a cd/dvd the bsod appears before setup/repair can begin.

to me.
that sounds like the motherboard is checking the HDD first.
you need to change the boot order.
then HDD as the second one.
to change it(please look online/manual for your specifiec motherboard)
you need to press DEL during the booting process->then look for boot something or other option->press enter->then look for the boot order->set optival d rive as first->set HDD as second->reboot with CD in drive.
that should get it working :)

What it sounds to me, is that the sata controller on your motherboard is freaking out. Recent BIOS change? Set to defaults?

If you can read the HDD in another machine, I would say it's fine. I would test it though with a manufacturers diag.

Are there any puffy capacitors on your board? You might have gotten really unlucky and had the sata controller pop. Does the pc function as normal with an IDE drive attached?

EDIT: Or try changing your RAM out, if windows/usb stick/install disks are loading themselves into RAM and getting a bad address, you will get this BSOD as well.

Are you able to read the BSOD error? You might have a hardware problem.

I guess I was vague...I am set to boot from cd/dvd drive first.....it will not read the disk. I cannot access the hdd in another unit except in a read only mode using Hirens boot disk tools in dos mode. I am sure the drive is corrupt, but I only wish to retrieve a few folders from it then I'll wipe it and re-partition and format it again. I just need to copy the pics and some docs to a flash drive then I'm good.

I would use a linux boot cd like fedora. If you cannot access it that way, use the linux tool dd to do a binary dump, mount it, and retrieve the data you need.

I doubt that Windows Updates would corrupt the drive to an unreadable state. Sounds like there is a hardware problem there.

I would pull the hard drive, attach it to another machine over USB, & if it can map a drive letter issue a chkdsk /r. If it can't be mapped, the file system maybe unreadable & would follow the dd advice suggested by hlx. Dump it to a 2nd location, reformat the drive, dump the data back..

Judging from what you have described here : either the partition is jacked, or the drive is dead.

I think you guys are right on the money....I'm gonna try the linux boot disk and see if I cna retrieve those files....if not so what . I've been without them this long....must not be real important. I will let you know what the issue was caused by and I appreciate your input.
Thx again,
Christopher
