Does anyone else...
Posted 17 February 2007 - 09:27 AM
Does anyone else (at least sometimes) end their sentences with a ; ?
I was reading one of my posts, and I didn't even realize I'd done it then... heh but it happens all the time.

I sometimes end my sentences with a little dance - a kind of derivative jig.

Technically, it isn't a sentence if it ends with a ";". The words before it would be considered to have an idea, but it isn't completely a sentence. FYI.
Never use it. Very deceitful. More of ellipsis and comma.

there are 3 uses for a semicolon...
1) joining an independent clause in a compound sentence that does not have a coordinating conjunction
Today I went to the zoo; i want to go again tomorrow.
2) before adverbial conjunctions when joining simple sentences.
I was to tired to do anything; therefor, we are going out tonight.
3) to separate items in a series when the items already contain commas.
My favorite people online are Sloth, he is a riot; Skyhawk, the webmaster; and Cookie Mobster, he is so sexy.
So use them and use them well.

I enjoy the fact that in a grammar lesson you made one of the most common mistakes:
[quote]
I was to tired to do anything; therefor, we are going out tonight.
[quote]
to != too
There is some literary device that applies here, probably alliteration.
