how to use vlc as backend for audio instead of directShow

Posted 23 July 2011 - 08:13 PM

I've done a bit of searching but have not specifically found how I could use vlc instead of directShow as the backend for an application I have been working on. I am currently using phonon but have found it to be problematic because it does not read the total time of a song from the header correctly. I think this is due to the fact that some mp3 files have variable bit rates and this throws off phonon. I am new to python and would love to know how I could specifically use vlc as the backend with my current application. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
