I have a dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I let someone use it and it got a virus and now it won't boot from the OS (operating system). I don't have the original disc with the program which I need to repair the problem. I need an alternate solution because I was going to try to get the info off the hard drive and put it on an external drive and then wipe the drive and maybe upgrade to a newer version but the drive didn't fit in the enclosure that i have. Any suggestions?

You could download a live CD of a linux variant which should give you access to the files. Haven't messed with it for a while but I'm sure if you do some searching you can find a bootable version that will allow you to fix your boot problem with FixMBR or FixBoot etc...

Boot from another Windows Disc, be it home or pro or media centre. Use the recovery console as said above to Fixboot /Fixmbr. If you have your original discs you could even try a repair install.
if you lack a Windows disc, go to your local computer repair shop, ask them to burn you one and they will probably charge you a couple bucks. (disclaimer: this is not illegal, using windows without a proper license is.)
