He lives in ABQ, you live in ABQ, go find him and give him a big hug for me.
TL;DR: Dude rescues a 6-year-old neighbor from being kidnapped by chasing the van like a boss.
Have any of you guys done anything heroic? Or even good Samaritanly? Donated to Goodwill for tax deductions? XD
I personally volunteer on a regular basis, donate stuff when I can, pick up trash on the ground when I walk past it, etc.

When we donate -- which is frequently -- we specifically do NOT claim it as a tax writeoff. It's a friggin' donation! If I'm to benefit from it at all, I only want good karma.

This.
I never write off donations. It seems to me if you're donating your items for the tax deduction, your heart is in the wrong place to begin with. And if I'm giving a monetary donation, I always donate in cash... (1) No one needs to be tracking how much money I gave to one organization or another and (2) I don't want a receipt for my taxes. The whole point in a donation is to help someone/something other than myself.

I give money to the homeless sometimes. I know they will spend it on beer/heroin or (possibly) food, but hey, if that's what he wants, let him have it.

Don't give the homeless any money! Pretty soon there will be more and more homeless begging for change! They'll infest your whole city! Then pretty soon you'll be out of change, and can't afford the bus fare then BAM! You start begging for change. You've become one of them.

An argument could be made that you feel you are taking money that would otherwise go to the government and sending it directly to where it would be most useful, in your opinion. By writing off the amount, you have more influence over where your money goes, so the government isn't wasting as much of your money or using it for the "wrong" things.

I don't judge for writeoffs for any reason, to be honest. The recipient gets the items for free and can make a profit, and their profit is not reduced by my claiming it.
