When giving negative reputation, the giver should enter a very brief reason (about a few words or a sentence long) on why they are giving that person negative reputation.

Others will be able to learn what the person did wrong so they don't also get scarred with negative reputation.

When someone gives a neg rep, they should send a letter with a reason. That way, we know they got it.

They used to do that with the old "rep" system, or thanks system. There was no downrep, but I would like to see it give a reason again. Not so much with + but definitely with -.

Yeah it would be nice to click the rep-count and see the reason next to the giver's name.

I'd love the ones that are clearly retaliatory. You neg rep somebody, they do the same in return and their reasoning would have to be something like "He gave me negative rep! Screw that guy!"

I wouldn't be opposed to it totally. It WOULD slow down people from neg-rep hunting, but on the other hand, they could simply enter bogus data, like "sjdkajsdkjad" and have the same effect as the current reputation system. While it might help administration and the end-user know some reasons, in the end, it's the same thing - those who abuse the system will abuse the system.

Also, even for the non-rep abuse cases, if you give someone a downvote and include a reason, it opens the door for more debate about it. Naturally, people go "wtf, why did you downvote me?! I didn't deserve that!" And if they see a reason, they're more likely to debate that. I think it's more likely to offend people than anything else.

I think overall, we all need to keep in mind that rep is a subjective thing. Abuses are handled by the moderation team. But beyond that, it's a number that really doesn't affect anyone's permissions or usability on the forum.

I say we ditch the entire rep system and go back to people posting in threads just to say "lol".

If you think it's necessary to say why you gave a positive or bad reputation why not simply quote the post and post the reason?

I only give negative rep for plain wrong answers, not opinions. At least I try to. If I downrep somebody I'll probably already post why in the thread.
