I don't understand internet?

Posted 15 September 2011 - 03:58 PM

Why do I need to pay for hosting? Who gave Register.com and similar sites rights to register domains?
Does Google pay for hosting? Does Facebook? How did Mark Zuckenberg setup servers and registered domain? Who owns the internet? If I would have powerful server computer, permanent connection, power backups, linux server running, apache, mysql and everything, how would I register domain? Could I be independent?
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Someone has to buy and lay down the infrastructure (wire/optics) that supports your bandwidth. Someone owns that and your hosting company has to pay to use it. They also have to buy the server for you to upload your stuff to. They have to pay for admins, tech support, accountatns, marketing, office space, software, etc.

They pass all these costs on to you. You might buy your own server but you're hardly going to lay your own cable.

domain name registrars give people domain names(you register with them). this is all standardized by ICANN so that 2 registrars don't try to register 2 different domain names with different people. no one owns the internet, people own servers which connect with an ISP that connects all the their connected servers to all the other ISP's in the world. it's just a really cool way of connecting lot's of servers basically.

Yes you can technically be 'independent' and host off your own hardware.

Instead of paying for someone to host for you, you will have to pay for the bandwidth yourself (consumer grade internet connections aren't fast or reliable enough to host an active website).

The one caveat left is the domain registration. Read about DNS servers and domain name standardization to understand what that 5 dollar fee is all about. Though technically you can get away with out one... people would need to know your IP address in that case.

I actually do what you speak of and host my own web services off my own server running here in my house. My internet isn't fast enough to host anything with the traffic of like say here on DIC, but it's good enough to host some videogames and other services between me and my friends. There are even free dynamic DNS redirecting services that can give you a basic domain name for use, really nice because consume grade internet connections tend to be dynamic IPs and some even block port 80 (the common port used for http requests).

I host our equipment at my shop. When you pay for someone else to host equipment or websites what you are paying for is the convince of uptime, security, updates, & so on. Sometimes I'll get a call because something is done & if I'm away the customer suffers. The difference between paying for hosting or hosting your own equipment is who's shoulders the responsibility lands on. The more business you do, the less time you have to be bothered at 1:am because everything is down.

You don't have to pay for anything more than you what you don't want to. If you don't want or need a top level domain, then don't pay for it. People can still access your site via the ip. The domain name is just for convince of the general public to find & remember your site.

wouldn't you have issues with site traffic though? I thought you needed some crazy good upload times so that the on the client side there download times are good.

Or you can do what lots of people do and don't care about your website loading slowly. Hopefully someone plugs your site on Slashdot and then your site goes down for a while.
