Concerning Creation of JAR Files

Posted 19 September 2011 - 04:50 PM

Hello all! My name is Anthony, and I'm new here at Dream.In.Code, and this is my first question! To begin I would like to say I am new to Java but not new to coding, I am using Eclipse IDE 3.7 for Java and only have a basic knowledge of Java. I understand how it works; I don't know very much code... On to my question! I am wishing to create a simple JAR file for my own education/demonstration. Yet despite my searching and reading through my book I cannot find any relevant information about how JAR files are constructed. So, what defines a JAR file? How does one compile/make one?
-Anthony

P.S. I wish to work with JAR files because of their seeming simplistic nature and cross-compatibility. This is true, yes?

My dearest apologies, I realise I posted this in the wrong forum. May a moderator move it for me? Thank you.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Then why post your question in the VB.net section?

Thank you very much, I apologise. I believe the VB.net section of the forum is just below the Java forum in the "Ask a new question" drop-down bar. Must have been a mis-click.

If you're going to spend some time with Java, you should learn to use the Java Tutorials and the API. Google searches will usually result in the API or Tutorial results near the top of the list.

While Eclipse will create JAR files for you (check the Eclipse documentation), you should know what they are and maybe how to make them without Eclipse. Here's the JAR Tutorial in the Java Tutorials. I didn't read the full "trail," but I imagine that Netbeans is mentioned as the recommended IDE and a way to create JAR files. If you prefer Eclipse, stick with that.

Good luck, welcome to the DIC Java Forum, and let us know if you have more questions.
