nothing going into usbs recognized in ubuntu

ubuntu laptop.

not the newest release, whatever the last one was called.
dapper drake?

anyways,
cant get anything i plug into the usb ports to work,
not a new problem,
just has never worked.

trying to get an external dvd drive to plug in so i can get to edgy eft or w/e the heck its called.

Meaning no offense, but are you mounting the USB devices (or the usb folder), or just plugging in?

okay,
tried mounting.
still getting nothing.
it doesn't even seem to recognize the usb ports are there.

run the command
dmesg
then plug something into a usb port
then run dmesg again, it should have some info about any hardware events
