Question on DataType Precision after SELECT INTO

Posted 12 October 2011 - 01:42 AM

I have created a table. Say the column name is txtCol which DataType is varchar(5).

I stored that table's data in a temp table using SELECT INTO

When I am adding rows to that table, some rows are truncated.

I checked the columns of the temp table with sp_columns and saw that the column, txtCol, has the datatype varchar(4).

I am wondering why did the precision change.

I am not sure but I am thinking if it has something to do with the length of the first data.

Well, I don't really know.

Does anyone know why?
