Users Not Being Able To Log-In

Post icon  Posted 18 March 2007 - 11:18 AM

My windows XP Home was running fine. Everything worked. When HDD's went into standby mode they came back normally.
But since I installled Ubuntu 6.06 and Kubuntu 6.06 everything seems to have gone downhill. Here is a list of problems I have encountered.

1) My screen turns off and have to end up restarting to get it back. This happens when I am doing certain tasks such as compiling programs or uninstalling programs
2) Users other than mine can not log-in. You enter the password, it says they have logged in and logs straight back out again. I have tried making endless accounts, all have failed to log-in.
3) When my hard drives go into stand-by mode, (after around 20 minutes) they come back out to normal when I use a program, but sometimes the drive clicks loads and XP freezes for at least a minute

I am stuck with why these continuous errors are happening.
Can someone please address the problem or solution and I would be ever so grateful. Thank you!

I hate to admit this but you would probably probably find better advice on this in a Ubuntu forum. It sounds to me like you may have had problems when creating your partitions. Normally a linux partition should not affect your Windoze partition at all. A re-install of Ubuntu may do the trick. Or running the Windoze Recovery Cd with chkdsk /R or chkdsk /F may fix things. But like I said, an Ubuntu forum will probably shed more light on your problems.

See if you can boot into recovery mode. You shouldn't need the disk for that. You should be able to get to a Windows boot option screen by pressing the function buttons during startup. Then run the chkdsk command.

I had the same problem, my solution was to reinstall XP. If you do decide to do the dual or tri boot, you may want to use Windows to create the partitions. Then install Ubuntu and Kubuntu on the extra space. But if I were you I would just use VM to run the Linux Distros.

I know I'm late to reply, but whatever ... . System Rescue CD was my best friend in such a situation. I used it to boot and then launch FreeDos. From there I was able to restore the master boot record, and wipe out the linux partition.
