Is the story line the same with WoW on a private server?
They are identical. The difference is bugs. Private servers have a lot of bugs and you will experience them quickly. They get better and better all the time but they are still riddled with bugs. Most of them also tend to be laggy.
There can actually be differences. Some servers are called "Blizz-Like". These are servers that are meant to be as close to Blizzard's servers as possible. There are other server that are called "Fun Servers". These give you a lot more experience points and gold. I played a brand new character on a "Fun Server" for about ten minutes and was around level 13 and had about 10,000 gold. It seems a little over the top but I guess there are people that would like it.
Realize that you still need to purchase a copy of the game to play on these servers. If you download the trial client with the intention of playing in these servers or playing beyond the trial time then you are breaking the EULA that comes with that client. Installing the game from someone else's cd's is the same. If you do not purchase the game and you play it (even on these servers) it is still piracy. Seriously, the game is about $20 at Wal-Mart and the expansion is about $35. Go buy it.
