I tried to use gentoo, but I couldn't get the live CD to work properly, and the manual install is really long. After I got the manual install working, it then wanted me to build every single package. The kernel, X, KDE, and anything else I wanted had to be built from source. There's just no reason for that. Unless there's some easier secret way that you know of. . .

That's the whole point of Gentoo. You build everything from source and it's the most totally customised to your hardware OS ever. Everything is compiled using the best options for your cpu, screen card, etc.

I know, but I prefer to be able to use my computer within a year of starting the OS install.
Of course, after I had gotten all the components installed, I screwed up ifconfig, and couldn't download anything.

I'll be the first to admit that Gentoo isn't the easiest OS to install and it isn't for those who like to put a disk in a hole and wander off while all the work is done but if you have the time and curiosity it's well worth it.
I was first shown Gentoo by a fellow coder who ran his entire business (web sites and sms online) on an old Dell Optiplex G1 running at 300Mhz I believe. Gentoo was so customised to his gear that it ran like a dream. He was a proper 'all in the shell' programmer, he never used X, but a higher spec'd machine with Gentoo is a treat. It uses so little resources compared to Windows and everything is designed to run on your gear, it's brill.

Well, seeing as you started typing your reply before I deleted my question, I'll put it back ... A bit less-winded this time though ....
- Any experience with Slackware? I'm curious as to how Gentoo compares to it.
