MySQL Connector/NET in Visual C# Express

Posted 12 December 2011 - 11:42 AM

Since it's apparently not possible to add extra references through the IDE, is there a work around for using MySQL Connector/NET with Express? I've been developing in PHP for 8 years now and am trying to learn something new over here with C# and would like to start with using some data I already have.

What do you mean "it's apparently not possible to add extra references through the IDE"? Right click your solution -> add references... or the top of your code and use an imports statement.

I installed the MySQL Connector via their .msi, and then went to Add References -> .NET tab... I didn't see anything MySQL in there so I searched google and saw a forum reply somewhere that said extensions weren't available in the express IDE.

I've looked it over a couple of times, and don't think I'm over looking anything. I closed completely out of VE before installing the connector. I am using Visual C# Express 2010

Have you tried navigating to your MySql.Data.dll assembly?

Something like

Quote

c:\Program Files \MySQ\LMySQL Connector \Net 6.4.3Assembliesv4.0\MySql.Data.dll

Just like modi123_1 said you could point it directly to the assembly...

Also keep in mind that there is a visual studio plugin for MySQL: MySQL Visual Studio Plugin

His point is that Extensions aren't available for VS Express. You can't install an addon for them.

You can, however, add a reference to the .DLLs that the installer added to your system. You'll just have to browse to them instead of looking through the list of .NET assemblies.

Thanks guys, I guess I've gotten so spoiled by this new "automatically works IDE" thing that I was too lazy to find the ref myself. Been a while (years) since I've hacked around in anything other than PHP. I guess the hardest thing for me is not having a centralized place to reference (php.net) although I guess I'd have to know what I was referencing anyhow... =/

Thanks, I'll have to check that out.

Express DOES support extensions...

Extension Manager supports extensions in the VSIX package format, which may include project templates, item templates, toolbox items, Managed Extension Framework (MEF) components, and VSPackages.

For more information, you can read the following document:
http://msdn.microsof...y/dd293638.aspx

I quoted that from here...

Ok, extensions was the wrong word. Plugins.

There is a centralized set of references for all first-party components, it's called the MSDN. Though MySql is third-party, and as such wouldn't be there.

Have you tried Devart's DLLs? They are quite useful and easy to learn, no need for an installer either just the 2 DLLs (for free) add reference and using statements and you're sweet to go.
