IE7 Install Crashed Xp (need help...)

Posted 04 April 2007 - 09:13 PM

I tried installing IE7 again on a partition of Xp. After re-booting I had no desktop.. well a desktop wallpaper but no Start button or toolbar. No hot-key commands worked (like Ctrl-alt-Del or Windows Key + R) I had a message at the login screen that normaliz.dll was missing. I tried to see if the recovery cd would reload that dll (no luck), then I downloaded that dll onto a flash drive but I couldn't get the recovery cd to copy from the flash drive to the partition via the command line. (It said it couldn't find the E: drive) I tried mounting the partition with Linux but it said that it couldn't mount because Xp was not shut down properly (maybe a different distro would help?) I tried using the ntfsfix command too. I can't shut Windoze down properly because like I said No start button, no hot-key commands, otherwise I could mount the partition and inject that dll to the C:\WINDOWS\system\ directory.

This is normally where I would say the hell with it and just refortmat the whole thing, but I have some school stuff I actually need off of that partition. So if you have suggestions please throw them at me.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

can you get to the command line?

found a thread that said if you can to try and run a system restore that way.

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

all the other fixes invovled getting into your task manager.

a bunch of people had this with cracked versions of xp. is yours legit? don't answer that.

and the rest of the responses said scrub the disk and start over.

sorry , not alot of help. see who else chimes in.

I actually just found that command you were talking about right after my first post. I drove home ran it and Xp is running again. Fortunately the Command line only Safe Mode worked.

Some days I feel like I could write a tutorial just on how to wreck Xp. :P

I had some serious issues with the IE7 update, and same goes with a few machines in the office.

I have found that running basically any security software, antivirus etc. while running the update can potentially mess it up pretty good.
