Vista:=Vista+XP; {how?}

Posted 07 April 2007 - 04:05 AM

Hi friends!
I 've been told that the gurus are all here...
I have bought an HP dv9393ea maschine with Vista preinstalled.
I am trying to install windows XP on that laptop and configure a dual booting system. The maschine has two hard disks. I don't care if XP will be installed in one disk (C:) or in two (Vista in C: and XP in D:...). Actually I have tried both ways. I have tried to install XP in D:, I have even tried after making disk D: as "active" with no positive result. Then I prepared a second partition on the C: disk (drive 0) and tried to install XP there. Unfortunately when I reboot the system in order to proceed with the windows XP installation the system first reads the necessary text files and then asks for a confirmation (you know, press enter to proceed, F3 to exit e.t.c). As soon as I press Enter to confirm, I am receiving the message "... the setup didn't find any available hard disk drive installed on your computer and should be closed... press F3 to cancel installation e.t.c..."
After that, I have to reboot the system and return to Vista.

Along the hundrents of questions and answers that I red in the net noone has met this problem. All problems for them occure after the installation of XP :D . I can't even start  !.

Can anyone help?
Savvas

Yes, I have already red this post but it is describing the oposite situation (XP existing already Vista to be installed). I have Vista preinstalled and I have only a recovery disk and not an installation disk.....

Thanks

I don't know, but does vista come with a MBR recovery program? WindowsXP does and it's gotten me out a plenty a jam.

as long as you have 2 partitions, the vista boot loader should allow XP to be added, it does not use NTDLR, but this should not be a problem.
vista has the fixboot and fixmbr functions located under the repair option of the disc. I haven't done this properly, but should work:
1) vista already installed
2) install XP, this will replace your boot loader
3) restart with the vista disc in the drive
4) enter the repair mode
5) type bootrec.exe
6) type /fixboot (this creates a vista boot record)
7) type /fixmbr (allows xp and vista at once)

before doing this, you may wish to run your vista disc and ensure you can actually get into the repair mode.

*perhaps i'll add a tutorial for this as well.

William,
I am still on point 2)...install XP,.... because my problem at the moment is that I CAN'T INSTRUCT THE PC TO READ THE XP INSTALLATION DISK after I have created the new partition for it.... (please see my original message)....

Thanks
