laptop purchasing advice

Posted 09 April 2007 - 08:27 AM

Everything else aside, here's two options I have. All other specs aside, just the processors I want to know about.

2.8ghz Celeron shit.

1.7ghz Pentium 4

Celetron is crap, but faster. I just want to make sure it's not THAT bad of a processor that I would be better off with a 1.7ghz P4.

This is for tuning my car, please no responses detailing what laptop's I should buy etc etc, just advice between those two and thanks!

the p4 would definitely be more reliable, so I would go with that.

Even with the speed different between 1.7ghz and 2.8ghz? Is this going to be able to run shit like photochop, flash, dreamweaver etc?

The guy trying to sell the P4, said a 2.7ghz celeron is about as a fast as 1ghz p4.... ??? Man, I wish I would have kept up with PC's since windows 98. lol

hey, i don't know about the difference here , wait for someone else to tell you , but im ona 1.8 ghz p4 and run ps, flash, dreamweaver everything fine, watch movies with ps running if there is a wall out there, its pretty far away with respect to what i can do.

if your used to something faster though who knows.

it all depends on if you need the cashe

The Celeron of the same manufacture P4 does not have the cash a P4 does. The old addage used to be take 2 identical cars throw 4 space saver tires on 1 and that was the performance to a comparable pentium.

With that I dont know if it is a corolla versus a mustang GT or a corolla vs a mustang gt with 4 space saver tires

***Edit here is what I found for the 2 cores****

1.7 P4

Codename: Willamette Clock Speed: 1700 MHz
FSB: 100 MHz Multiplier: 17x
Package: uPGA Socket: 423
Process Size: 180nm Voltage: 1.7 V
Transistor count: 42M TDP: 52 W
# of cores: 1 SMP # CPUs: 1
Cache L1: 8 KB Cache L2: 256 KB
Cache L3: 0 KB Die size: 217 mm˛
Released: unknown Part #: unknown
Features: MMX, SSE, SSE2

2.8 celeron

Codename: Northwood Clock Speed: 2800 MHz
FSB: 100 MHz Multiplier: 28x
Package: uPGA Socket: 478
Process Size: 130nm Voltage: 1.55 V
Transistor count: 55M TDP: 73 W
# of cores: 1 SMP # CPUs: 1
Cache L1: 8 KB Cache L2: 128 KB
Cache L3: 0 KB Die size: 146 mm˛
Released: unknown Part #: unknown
Features: MMX, SSE, SSE2

L1 and L2 Cashe are the same the FSB speed is the same so you are looking at a corolla with an automatic vs a corolla s with a stick they are both of decent performance (IE no Kia) however the celeron has a smaller distance between the transistors (less power required but only a smidge) and 1.1GHZ in pure clock speed. If I had to choose the Celeron would be coming home with me if they were the same $$$. Notice the core name is Northwood remember the P4 Northwoods? basically they renamed the P4 Northwood to the Celeron when the newer P4's came out
