You should uptrade it like that dude in Canada did years back when he started with a paperclip and ended up with a house or car or a free gender reassignment surgery or whatever it was that was far more valuable than the the original paperclip. You can bet HE didn't ask for guidance on what to do in the common forum of a tech site. HE had moxy, drive and a paperclip he knew he could turn into something of value. YOU have a formerly broken 500GB external HD. You should be able to end up as Grand Poobah of the Moon or something unless you're totally bereft of any discernable sales skill in which case your entire endeavour will be an unmitigated failure that will haunt you to the surely early grave such epic implosions seem to invariably contribute to.
Or you could just send it to tlhIn`toq and entirely avoid the inevitable tragic disaster it will make of your formerly drive-less life.

Sounds like fixing it up was a cool project in itself but right now, you're trying to contrive a use out of it to justify its existence.
You could do a lot worse than selling it or giving it away. You got it for free and had fun fixing it. Maybe you know someone who would benefit from having it for backups: maybe some teenager who can't afford hardware like that or a non tech-savvy adult with important files who would never implement a backup system without prompting.
You could put it into storage for when you do need it, but if that's in a few years 500MB might seem pitiful and mechanical hard drives might have gone the way of the punched card.

Use the 500Gbs as a release for all that bottled up technology induced angst, by smashing it with a hammer.

I am still lost - why isn't the alternative of returning it back to the original owner being evaluated? Do you have a problem with doing good deeds or positive karma? DO YOU?!

Sigh... I remember my first hard drive. It was awesome. It was the size of a phone book, with a huge loud fan in it, and it sat under my Mac Plus. It had all the space I could imagine needing at the time.
Ten megabytes, man, who could ever need anything more than that?
(bear in mind that in the mid '80s file size was still measured in kilobytes)

Does the "Finders, keepers / Losers, weepers". apply to resurrected tech?
