Megaupload shut down by feds

Posted 19 January 2012 - 02:28 PM

Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

Maybe only the start of things to come?

This I'm ok with. Much better than passing legislation that only hurts everyone else.

Apparently now Anonymous has launched a denial of service attack on the Department of Justice website in response to the takedown...

Frankly Megaupload should have not tried to meddle in the affairs of wizards.

I'm going to call the state and have everyone who owns bus station lockers, sit-in restaurants, parking-lots, UPS/FedEx/USPS, and anyone else who has assisted criminals in the illegal trafficking of dirty money, drugs, and weapons.

Hey, criminals have been using these tools to facilitate their illegal practices. And these businesses might "say" they do their best to make sure criminals don't use their places of business to perform crimes... but they obviously have been failing for decades to stop criminals.

So I say string them up!

It's not realy as simple as that. See, MegaUpload insentivized people sharing popular files, then ignored take down notices. So for example, say I posted Harry Potter and a million people downloaded it, they would pay me for uploading it. Then the MPAA sends a take down notice and they don't respond. From what i've heard, they had it coming. If they a) didn't pay people for posting popular content B) responded to take down notices quickly, they wouldn't have been where they are now.

To use your analogy, its more like renting out a postal box for drug sales, but then taking a cut of all drug sales that go through that postal box.

You are right, my analogy was more about SOPA and PIPA.

I've since posting looked further into this specific case (which of course isn't because of SOPA or PIPA because neither have be enacted) and noticed that the charges are related to a bit more then that.
