Ok, so just wondering what the response would be to having a forum on DIC for Network and/or Server Management topics? I'm not sure how many folks out there would like to exchange horror stories or best practices, but it might be worthwhile. I've been watching the "Operating Systems" and "Hardware" areas, but the posts there really don't jive with what I'm talking about here.
What do you think?

the "networking" forum is meant to broad enough to cover this i think. i don't think we have the traffic to warrant a forum just for management of said networks.

true there have only been 10 threads that would even fit and I think I started both of them.
That one on trying to break my remote admin server and the other when I needed tracerts to diagnose where the router went down.

I guess what I'm after is a place where folks who manage servers (web, application, etc.) can share their information about configuration, OS, etc. issues. I'm not looking for long-winded debates about Apache vs. Win2003, more likely discussions about the best ways to configure things, security issues, management tasks, best practices for server placement in networks, software conflicts, optimizing performance vs. security...things like that. I can post over in the Network forum and see how it goes, but I guess I was also curious to see if other NA's were using this great site (WTG Chris!).

DIC doesn't have a huge demand for networking geeks like me or Thorian, so there definitely isn't enough topics floating around to make a server administration forum. The Networking and Wireless forums we're actually recently combined due to the lack of content in them.
By all means, feel free to start topics on the subject, I know a few of us would be interested but DIC will always be more of a programming community then IT.

Thanks Marko...ever since Chris (who used to be my neighbor for years...he and I designed sites together...his brother rooms with my son at college) and I started web design, during our long discussions about development, I was always left with a feeling that something was missing and this was usually it. Programming and developing are fun but eventually you have to gain a pretty good understanding of what's happening at the server.
I'll throw some questions out there and see what happens! Maybe it'll attract some other NA-types!

Yup. The boy's done me proud. He's a real genius when it comes to math and CS stuff; I do my best to keep up but honestly most the time he flat leaves me in the dust.
Yeah, Chris and I used to design sites in the sand in my back yard...back in the day. I manage all things web for our local school district and get to "play" in ColdFusion but really don't have a lot of time for coding/programming. That's why I was asking about server management because I really need to step up in my knowledge there.
Ok, you can wake up now........ ;-P
