it would appear that the hard drive has completely failed

If you cannot do a fixmbr (Fix Master Boot Record) and a chkdsk -r Check Disk - Repair ) from the recovery console you may have just lost everything you have on the disk.

however if you were trying to format the disk there must not be too much you were trying to recover.

I would try some low-level recovery applications, like GetDataBack or something similar.
They might find data even when the partition table is damaged.

Unless you have important Data on there that you must have I would just upgrade. Other than that I think you may be out of luck. You may be able to find some crazy way to get you data back. I know that sometimes at the IT place I work we sometimes put the crashed HDD's in a static free bag and throw them in the freezer overnight. It works sometimes and other times it doesn't. Good luck!

the only thing is that you only have 1 shot at the freeze trick because as soon as the platters start to thaw the condensation will fry the drive. Minimum 24 hours before attempting the freeze trick. Yes I have used it and yes the drives have never worked again. You still need a drive to copy the data to and it needs to have a clean OS load on it.
