For Those About To Mod!

Posted 14 May 2001 - 10:07 PM

Since I posted to 'Skyhawk' that i do mods (& then this forum appeared), I guess this is the place to show off those hype geek boxes (other than the local LANs).  Patience, this has 5 pix in it :)

Pic #1: My main box: Wintermute.5, showing of her (his, it's?) gloss Blue face (One-Shot Reflex Blue for you artists out there) w/White buttons.
Posted Image

Pic #2: Wintermute.5, side, showing the beautiful window hole, if only my sand blasting (yes, sand blasting) masks would get here for the plexi.  Also shows the CD-R drawer nicer.
Posted Image

Pic #3: Detail of the top, showing off the new chimney fans (drilled out as nuke symbols, of course!) w/"Warning: Exhaust Port" on each (sorry about the glare!)
Posted Image

Pic #4: Akira.  I love this box.  486/100 w/a double height 5 1/4 single sided, double density drive (note: this drive is probably older than 'Skyhawk'!), borrowed from a TRS-80 (mwa ha ha, though i go w/o saying it didn't ya?).  Simple Black w/spatter White stars & clouds (wait, that sounds a bit too Martha Stewart!?).
Posted Image

Pic #5: The last one.  Just in case some of you kiddies out there hadn't seen a TRS-80 before, here is your chance! This is my newest Model 4 w/Wintermute.5 in the background.  LOOK! It still runs at that blazing 2.3mHz (4.6 if you overclock it (which it has)).  I just wish it had the White screen instead of the Green one (they did come in more than 1 color)

Come on ya'll, I'm sure you got some fine boxes out there, so post 'em & be proud!

i'm in the middle of building my new system.. have everything but the motherboard.. and i get it in a couple days.. i have a full server tower case.. heres some pictures of the case itself:

The Back:

An Inside Picture:

More Insides:

this case is sweet.. you can mount the hard-drives liek you would normaly @ the first under the floppy.. or above the power suply is a little tray that holds 5 hard drives and behind there is a place for two big bay fans to keep them kewl.. all i have in there is a maxtor 80GB but i had to get the two fans.. this thing will be runnin 24/7 and that hard-drive is gunna be ice-cold, nuhahah.. then i have my ATI-Radeon 64MB DDR.. its already got a fan on there.. and i have a AMD Athlon T-Bird @ 1.2GHz being cooled with the Volcano II:
Posted Image

i was going to go with the Orb.. but i had some cons about it.. one thing its in-campatible with alot of motherboards, because it gets in the way of the capasitors.. so i wouldnt take my chances.. plus WTF is the heatsink gunna do when its not touchin anything, its like outside.. oh well i went with that one.. made by the same company.. and i bought another one for my other T-Birc 1GHz.. heres a more detailed picture, hehe
Posted Image

when i'm done i'll take some pictures and benchmark screenies.. i'm gunna have the round IDE cables in there.. gunna put windows on the side.. prolly not.. might get my friend to airbrush it.. hes awsome at that.. i'll get some wacky leprechaun designs thing on it.. or #### even better, then dream.in.code modded case.. i'll get a bunch of d.i.c crap air brushed on there.. chris if you get some time maybe you could wip up sumthin in photoshop that would look kewl on the side of a case.. not sure yet what i'm gunna do.. just play it by year.. and this is like the logest post i've ever posted and i'm dieing to eat that pizza over there so i'm gunna stop typing now. heh

cool case Leprechaun.  just one thing, that cable pass through in the middle might restrict your airflow (after you install the cables, of course).  that & i don't think mounting HDD above a power supply would be too keen (especially if the airflow is a problem.)

its all about the heat (though that is a monster case!!!) & where its going, out hopefully.

You know what I'd like to see, LeP? Take that translucent cyan bit on the side, seal it up nice and good, fill it with some water, and run some bubbles through there! That would rock! :)

nah, neons are great, lets you see where you put your red bull at the LAN (not to mention that it creates an undeniable attraction for geek-grrrls.)  ok, maybe not, but you definitely won't stub 'yer toe on it in the middle of the night anymore.  actually, w/o going to all the trouble of neon (just waiting for mine to come in), i've gone w/a simple 12v blue lamp from radio shack (on the pix, just right of the black switch).  provides just enough light to 'not' walk into the cd tray after a burn (yes, i know auto-eject is a setting).

anyway, monday i'll probably have more pix (the sand blast mask came in, so i can finally work on the plexi, instead of having a gapping hole in the side!)  next, neon & power supply mods (350w, but i got somethin' special in store. bwa ha ha.)  think i should make tutes for d.i.c.? (ie, photo & explain every step (not that your ever going to need to mangle your PSU case, but one day))
