What would be an impressive JavaScript project?

Posted 14 April 2012 - 04:26 AM

I've been told that I should include Javascript projects in my portfolio.

The problem being: I don't know what an impressive JS project IS. I don't mean using JS as part of a complete website; the person said to make a standalone HTML page with JS functionality. Isn't JS without back-end support just DOM manipulation*?

I took some time to think it; but I still got nothing. Is 'show me your best JS work' a normal request from a client (that actually develops)?

*I know that you would use it to access web APIs...but is that honestly work showing anybody?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

There is a lot of potential for impressive javascript . Build a polished user interface with jquery, - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JQuery .

You could always create a game using the HTML5 canvas, or even the WebGL 3D API. If you did that properly, that would be damn impressive. However it wouldn't exactly showcase your talents as a web developer, more as a game developer.

If you want to add something to your portfolio as a means of convincing potential clients that you're the best person to hire, then I'd recommend you add some real-world projects, as opposed to some arbitrary "impressive" project. It would be far better to do some common project in an impressive way, rather than do some impressive but ultimately useless project.

I'm not sure if this is 100% Javascript, but check the following web app out:

gear template generator

kind of an interesting project idea if you don't want to do a UI or a game

That's actually Flash, , if I am not mistaken. But it could be replicated using the <canvas> element, or even possibly a SVG.
