That is awesome!

I am almost tempted to find the original post and vote it up! How can a line that ridiculous not bring joy to your day?

Well I've not noted every single one (as I have chosen to ignore them) but as a random example:

The only logical way to celebrate a great victory such as this is to masturbate furiously.

Is this an appropriate behaviour from a forum "leader".

Further the thread in question that as I was down-voted for, I believe the response was both aggressive and derogatory, yet because that individual has a "high" reputation, users seem to have a double standard in judgement.

However it was strange that I was in turn not able to down vote the responder in that very thread (I have outlined why I believed he's response was not good in that thread).

In my view he's conduct was not necessary. What made less sense, was although I was down voted, yet I was not allowed to down vote others?

You couldn't vote because you need a minimum number of posts before you are allowed to down vote. It is in the newbie FAQ that appears at the top of the screen before you get to 5 posts. I think you need 10 posts before you can give negative feed back.

I've only been around for a couple of days but generally the community is exceedingly helpful. Give it a chance and see where it goes.

BTW, not that it is relevant, but I thought the post in question was kinda harmless.

Why so serious?

It's the internet. Reputation is a trivial number and should not be the basis of self worth. The lounge is a breed all its own and should not be held to any reasonable or logical standard.

Live and learn mate, live and learn. You get downvoted, just make a note to avoid it.

Seriously... rep is just a number meant to stroke the egos of the already egomaniacal. Look at my rep, for example... my glorious, beautiful rep... guess how much of it I got from actually being helpful? Go ahead... guess!

The rest is from being a professional jerk in the Lounge. I love the Lounge. It is my home.

I have only joined this community yesterday.

I've tried my utmost to be polite and well mannered. I've read all the rules, and to the best of my knowledge stayed within those guidelines.

Please review all my posts, if I have acted in an offensive manner and contrary to the spirit of DIC; then please to show me the evidence of this.

Now, what has started to disturb me, is this reputation system.

I understand if ones behaviour has been particularly bad, then this should be reflected in some kind of down vote (as per the reputation system).

Being down-voted (negative reputation), without an explanation does not seem fair in my view.

So I'm still holding out hope that this community is not like this and there are some very good reasons for this strange behaviour.

If this post is not in the correct forum, them please do move it to the correct sub forum.

Your views are most welcome.

I think I love DIC for the same reasons it's disturbing you. The programming forums are extremely helpful but will not tolerate crappy help (I've been downvoted for not reading a question carefully enough and posting a reply that didn't apply, and I agreed with negative rep), and the lounge is about as predictable as a meth-head after three days of no sleep. The dynamic is awesome, and if you find yourself pissing people off, just step back, write it off, and move on. Nobody (hopefully...) is going to keep track of your name and harass everything you say, so let it go and understand that that's the way it is here. No kiddie gloves...

Since this has hit the frontpage I guess I should express why I downvoted you.

It was primarily because posted a completely irrelevant rambling story on a very specific programming question.

If that same thread was in the Lounge, I wouldn't have done so because it would fit the context of the subforum.

Helpful is subjective. :P

Side note: OP just joined the forum 2 days ago. In all fairness, he hasn't been here long enough to see anything truly disturbing.

I can't add much to what Hannibal and others have said about conduct on the forums. The lounge is the asylum. It's where they keep all the stupid shit so it doesn't go on in the programming forums.

As far as rep goes, I find it's a very useful piece of feedback for what I write. A big part of the reason I spend time answering questions in the java lounge is because it helps keep me sharp as a writer, so being able to see what people found especially helpful is quite useful to me.

And just to reinforce this point, even if all you want is rep for its own sake, you should act as if you just want to be helpful. Post useful answers to questions. If you're not the first one in, don't be afraid to add something that was missing from a previous post, or to add some clarification. Sometimes it's good to have a question answered in a few different ways - one of them will click, where maybe the others don't, and it's not always the first answer that's the best, even if it's correct.

Ya, the lounge isn't exactly where I would recommend everyone go to right off the bat; I would rather everyone see our good side in the help forums first, then you can appreciate the bad side.

FYI, "masturbating furiously" has kinda been adopted by the lounge; it's a part of our culture here so if you see it again just know it's a joke.

Now you tell us? You don't think there should be some sort of disclaimer? I mean, something before I had this conversation with my girl friend? Really... ?! :bananaman: :bananaman: :bananaman:
