Sony Vaio Notebook

Posted 03 May 2002 - 03:33 PM

So, I've been pricing out the Vaio R505 and it is a sweet machine... However, I just realized that it doesn't have Infrared! I must have IR...

So I'm looking for recommendations on a comparable Notebook. I checked Dell but they seem much more expensive... ideas? My current laptop is Toshiba, and I've loved it but they are a bit big and heavy, and I was really excited about the Sony's 4lbs!

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

maybe I could be more specific about what I'm looking for :P

I need something that is fast, light, and very portable (all the wireless and networking capabilities built in). I need cdrw, not necessarily dvd, but those two seem to come together, so that's fine.

I MUST have infrared because my Palm port just died and I can only sync through IR now, and don't want to buy a new palm.

unless there just are no good notebook options... in which case I may have to invest in a new Palm and get the R505 after all...

I haven't done any real research, but off the top of my head is the Alenware Area 51-M...not the lightest, and a little pricey (2800, nicely loaded)...but it kicks laptop booty! :)

wow, 2.4GHZ.

I can't tell if it has IR, or if they have Canadian distributors (cuz if not, it's not worth the extra expense to buy from the US!).

No one mentions the IR; the only way I knew the Vaio is lacking it is from reading a review...

have you checked out those new Gateway's that have the detachable bottom? I saw a commercial for it, dunno if it's good or not. Just thought I'd suggest it.

Alienware is out simply because they don't have a Canadian distributor. For me to buy anything from the US, the price usually ends up double (after duties, shipping, exchange, etc). So it's gotta be in Canada.

I'll check the Gateways, and I'll check the Sony docking stations... if the docking station has it, that's good enough!
