Athlon XP-2000 beats Northwood P4

Posted 29 January 2002 - 07:13 AM

Thomas C Greene writing about his testing with AMD XP-2000 vs. Northwood P4.
http://www.theregist...t/54/23845.html

Both CPUs were ran under Suse Linux 7.3 & Windows XP Pro. Both CPUs did reasonably well, but overall the XP seemed better at the tasks set fourth. Thing is he didn't have the correct mobo for the XP-2000, so he had to slow the FBS and clock speed from 1675 Mhz to 1265 Mhz. Interesting.

i'm tired of people benching the AMDs and P4s.  we all know by now that AMDs run faster at slower clock speeds than Intel chips.  thus the reason they changed their naming conventions.  but how about a real test?  Tom's Hardware over clocked those bad boys... drove a Northwood P4 to 3000Mhz!  now that's impressive!  and yes, the AMD did well too.  infact... they were so close i'm not even going to try to say that the P4 out performed the Athlon... just... well...  read for yourself.

http://www6.tomshard...0128/index.html

and i think they used the proper motherboards for this test...

Yeah, they used proper mb's.. but looking at the cooling system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This isn't realistic because most people don't have a watercooling system, therfore its kinda dumb to rate them at how high they can go when really, they can't go that high with 'normal' people

Yeh but with any kind of overclocking you need a different cooling system, new fan(s) and the such, so knowing how high you can get that chip is actually pretty cool (no pun intended) and there are people that would overclock to that speed, but if you do, you already know you are gonna need watercooling.

no kidding.  and the watercooling systems don't cot that much when you really look at them.  considering you'd be shelling out nearly 軸 for the P4 2200... a 贶-赨 watercooling system could be worked into your budget.  of course this isn't realistic for anyone doing serious productive work... but ####, at least it's possible.

Here is extreme for you, these Finnish boys have run a P4 Northwood up to 3675MHz on a liquid nitrogen cooling system. Here is a quick quote, "I think the 3675MHz Wcpuid-shot we were able to get can be considered as the overclocking world record at this moment (17/01/2002), but I'm pretty sure the Japanese will try to beat it as soon as possible :-)" --The English summary is at the end of the linked page.

And wouldn't you know it, those crazy Japanese did it, 3707MHz. Click here for detials. (Japanese)

Here is a little more information to add to Vetritus03's post.

Tom's Hardware did a review for water cooling systems early in January. You can see it here. I think all the kits where over 赨.00.

Also I know of two cases that come all ready setup for water cooling. One from Calm Systems (Korea) and this one from Koolance.

The  Koolance Mid-ATX runs about 赨.00 and the full tower about 跌.00. The Koolance can also cool your video card and hard drives.

My buddy was suppose to order a Koolance case, but have yet to hear if he got it. Maybe he can review it for us from a user stand point, in the meantime, here are reviews for both:
Koolance from Tom's Hardware
Koolance from [H]ARD|OCP
Koolance from Virtual Hideout
Koolance from Overclockers.com
And sadly, only one for the C-System's CALM PC Case from Arthur Gerla .

Enjoy!

so are we pushing OC'ing in the harware lounge now?  anyone know how to OC a laptop?  or maybe not the laptop but how about my POS ATI Rage Mobility M1 8MB video card... err... chip that's in this thing.  but i have a 800Mhz P3 Mobile processor (not to be confused with a P3m processor)... though i'm sure not much can be done without cracking the chassis... and this... would be totally against my warranty ;)

Whether or not overclocking is feasible (or desirable) to a normal user, the fact that these chips can handle these speeds (and honestly, that kind of overclockability with just a watercooling system is incredible), is a testiment to the strength of these chips' structures.

Both Honda's and Ferrari's tend to stay around 70MPH on a US interstate, but the fact that a Ferrari can hit 200MPH is a testament to it's strength compared to the Honda.
