Then, simply put: you're a CPU bigot.

I agree with the P4 thing though. They're not good enough to justify their cost yet. The cache is small to have a lower latency, but that has its own drawbacks.

Really! What's wrong with getting more MHZ for your buck, AND getting more operations per MHZ?

The Athlon 1.4 is almost the same real speed as the P4 2.0 ghz. It's slightly faster in some areas, and slightly slower in others. Heh, even the Athlon 1.2 is faster than the P4 2.0 doing some things.

the biggest problem i see with AMD is the motherboards people put them on.  and how they claim a 266Mhz FSB.  at least intel is honest when they say 133Mhz.

I remember Cyrix (doesn't VIA still sell them?). I remember when AMD was crappy, but they've come a long way. AMD has a lot of people hating them for their first 5 CPU's (K6 and previous) still. My current K6-II works fine, but it runs too hot (63ºC is a good temp for me :p), NVidia's Linux drivers don't like my (ALi) AGP chipset, and my Mobo. only supports AGP 2x, that's why I'm upgrading (can't wait for that thing to get here :)).

Intel doesn't lie about its FSB? The P4 only has a 100Mhz FSB, it's just quad pumped, and they claim it is 400Mhz. The AMD FSB is 133Mhz, but it's dual pumped.

you're EXACTLY right with that statement.  everything i've read says you're RIGHT.  but why are we talking about the P4?  i don't want one... wouldn't buy one.
what i REALLY want to see is a revolution in motherboards.  processors running at 2.0Ghz don't mean a thing when you have a BUS speed of even 800Mhz. (which i'm sorry, the RDRAM may clock that fast, but the P4 socket isn't pushing more than 200.  if the WHOLE Mbd were transferring at or around 1Ghz THEN we'd see some speed.  but then we'd have to trash PCI and AGP (running at 33 and 66Mhz)and who wants to get rid of ALL the legacy equipment?

Yeah, I agree. A long time ago I (and many others, I'm sure) realized that bandwidth both inside and outside of the tower would someday be the biggest factor. Intel and ATI (and now AMD's in on it) are making a new bus standard, something like 3GIO. AMD (as well as NVIDIA) was making a standard called HyperTransport, but they dropped it to make sure only one standard came out (we don't need any more division in the x86 realm :)).

why don't we drop x86 altogether?  and i've been reading up on the 3rd generation I/O.  it's still not going to fix anything.  intel keep rolling out crappy ideas like the CNR slot.  who needs that?  how many CNR devices have you seen to date?  and why the push for integrated devices?  integrated video/sound and the like is for the birds.  so what it's cheaper.  ever see someone on doing a QuakeIII graphics test on a I810 graphics chip?  LOL
