Athlon XP

Posted 09 October 2001 - 02:45 PM

anyone going to rush out and buy one of these?  might want to read this article first.  they've added theh SSE instruction set to the Athlon... it's been around since the P3 came out.  Also they added 52 more instructions to the existing SIMD set they already had.  Extreme tech benchmaked a T-Bird 1.4Ghz, a new XP @ 1.53Ghz, and a P4 2.0Ghz just for fun.  It's not suprising that the 1.4 T-Bird was a winner in more than a few of the tests... though they attribute that to the fact that the benchmarking apps haven't be revised to take advantade of the new instruction sets yet... but have a look.

Now you get to see someone who loves AMD say the things he dislikes about them:
What's with hardware companies naming all of their stuff after Windows XP? This makes me mad in the same way that Intel claiming that P4's would help you play MP3's and use the Internet, it's misleading. An Athlon XP won't help you run WinXP anymore than a TBird plus a couple extra Mhz does.

I dislike their up-and-coming PR system (where the Athlon 1800 is 1533Mhz, or something like that). I'll put up with it as long as it remains an accurate comparison. As soon as they begin to 'over rate' their own products, I'll really get ticked off.

But I am glad they're adopting SSE2, it's a pretty good extension, even if 3DNow! already did most of what it will do (AMD's calling SSE2 3DNow! Professional).

the XP in the AthlonXP is supposed to stand for "Extreme Performance"  but i agree it's pretty stupid.

Yeah, I read the article after posting, and noticed that as well :). But both NVidia and Hercules/Guillemot have done that XP naming thing.

NVidia: Detonator XP, enough said :)
Hercules: http://us.hercules.c...duct.php3?id=17

also signifies XP compliance... as in the WHQL signature... since many of the people buying Xp home will not know what the #### to download.  i guess the companies are banking on this...

That sickens me.  Because people actually fall for this crap.  It's downright dishonest.  They should let the product sell itself, no lies, just the facts.  (speed, socket, type, o/s compatibility, problems, conflicts, etc.)
That'll be the day...

Trakker, while I agree with what you're saying for the most part (as you can see from my first post, I don't like the PR system much) I can understand their argument. People are too stupid anymore. They've grown used to using Mhz as the only measurement. Most people don't even know what a pipeline is (much less a bus, instruction set, L1/L2 cache, et cetera), much less why making it longer is bad. But, we'll see. So far the reviews say AMD is underestimating their own CPU's, so it isn't (really) bad yet...
