LAN, Wifi Connects But Cannot Transfer Data

Posted 08 May 2007 - 06:23 AM

I've got an HP Notebook that runs Windows XP Home.

When I connect my Laptop to an ethernet cable, Windows detects a LAN connection and even connects but it fails to transfer data.
When I right-click the network connection icon in the taskbar and click Status, there are about 100 Packets for Sent and ZERO for Received Packets.

ditto for connection via Modem or connecting to a wireless network.
When I check the properties of my Wireless Card, it shows the MAC Address as 00-00-00-00-00-00.

What's wrong?

Not just that, my notebook takes ages to start and I noticed that two services Server and Workstation are responsible for this.

They take a lot of time to initialize, but once these services start, the notebook runs smoothly (for non-internet related tasks)

The "netstat" command in the command prompt gives me no output:
Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State

The ipconfig command doesn't work either. It asks me to contact Microsoft.

I gave my notebook to the HP Service Center and they think its an OS issue. It might be, since this problem started after a Windows Update Last Month.

But for some reason I feel that the problem is arising because of the hardware. (Esp. because since the Wireless Card MAC Address is Shown 000000000000)

What could the problem be?
Thanks Guys.

have seen this before, there are 2 things to check:
1) environment varibale PATH:
right-click my computer
advanced tab
environment variables
edit path to read PATH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32;C:\WINDOWS

2) make sure all services are running, this fix i had to do some reading on, something messes up from time to time with SP2, it is suggested that you re-install SP2 if you make chances to these services from MS.
Remote procedure call (RPC)
Routing and Remote Access
are the most likely to affect connection and ipconfig.

I'm sure the Paths were right.

It's with the Service Center now, so I can't do anything much but hope that it comes back the way it was.

But is it a Software or a Hardware problem?

since ipconfig does not work, sounds software. That little prog isn't smart enough to know if there is a net connection or not, and will return all 0s if there is a problem.

I'm guessing a few driver replacements and perhaps a re-install of SP2 is all it may take.. but who knows how long it'll take them to find the right driver to replace, lol

lol...They said they were gonna reinstall SP2.
So I guess they knew the problem beforehand.

I just hope I get it back in 2 days time.
Thanks.

I forgot to post when I received my notebook.
Windows got corrupted after a certain Windows Update Security Fix.
Thanks WW.
