If someone hands me back too much change I will only try once to give it back. I usually tell them they gave too much back and they reply with "No, I didn't!" I just smile and walk away.

Well, to her defense, coins like dimes, nickels, and pennies shouldn't even exist anymore...

Your opinion of the worthiness of coins doesn't negate the fact that she should know how to count and understand the basic principles of money conversion rates.

I suppose, giving the devil his due, that counting back change is actually a specialized algorithm. And it takes literally minutes to learn, so she can hardly be faulted for being too stupid to pick up the trick of it.

Many of the cash registers in this area have automatic change dispenser thing on the side where the coins fly out a hole in the side of the register, down a slide, and into a little cup thing where the customer scoops it up and the cashier never has to count it.

Wikipedia said:

The U.S. Mint's official name for a penny is "cent"[2] and the U.S. Treasury's official name is "one cent piece".[3] The colloquial term penny derives from the British coin of the same name, the pre-decimal version of which had a similar value. In American English, pennies is the plural form, other plural forms pence and pee (standard use in British English) are not used.

Wow that is insane... although I have never figured out how American money works, much easier here with 100 pence to the pound :)
