Just looking for a good kernel to use, im pretty tech savvy but i have never used a dfferent OS before... any suggestions?

I'm going to bet a 'custom kernel'. You can construct your own kernel, thusly making it 'custom'.

Then on top of that you can customize your software suite that goes with it. This includes the software that handles a GUI (if you want one), networking, sound, graphics rendering, etc etc etc...

that sir, that is what 'custom' is. And it's fairly complicated, one usually doesn't just jump into creating their own custom linux build (kernel and software suite) with out ever once using "another os" (whatever that means, as modi pointed out). You may want to start by trying linux in one of its distributions.

Then again you might be confusing 'kernel' with 'distribution'. And maybe you just want to be able to customize your user-experience. In that case you should be asking about good 'distros' for 'customizing user-experience'.

Note, the kernel is really just the heart of the operating-system. Most distros just use some common standard linux kernel. The kernel just takes care of the low level communication between the whole OS and the actual computer.
