IBM Power6 chip

Posted 22 May 2007 - 09:58 AM

IBM released their new PowerPC processor the other day. Doubles the speed, and uses the same power as the G5 processor.

I was reading an article about this on Ars Technica yesterday. 4.7GHz, crazy.

It's also a RISC arch, and I think those translate to faster than the same rate for Intel/AMD style. Did you see the L2 cache size? It's a whopping 8mb. My mac I'm on now only has 512kb, and my linux box has the same.

Yeah right. What is IBM thinking anyways?

Hello, I`m mister IBM, and right when PPC is dying off the face of the earth, I bring it back and make a monster with it.

If the PPC is so great, why didn`t IBM exploit it properly in the first place? That's on of these marketing decisions that make me wonder if managers at IBM have all their brain cells.

On the other hand, I can only but drool on the mighty power that this thing has to offer. I wonder what kind of RAM a processor with 8 megs of L2 requires to run at it's full potential.

I dunno, but Sun offers to sell workstations with 32 GB of ram. Friggin ridiculous.

It has happened a lot that some inferior product became accepted instead of something that was no doubt superior: beta vs. vhs, alpha vs. x86, GUS vs. Soundblaster, etc. It's not the first time, and not the last. And yes, probably the managers and marketing people simply are not up to the task...

That's sadly too true, 1lacca. However, marketing is usually focused on profits über alles. Think about how many converts Apple's recently gained from the Windows side because of x86 (Bootcamp and Parallels). I'm still rockin PowerPC's and I actually have some DEC Alpha's running OpenBSD. Steve Jobs could bite these nutz.
