Decent music player for LINUX?

Post icon  Posted 04 June 2007 - 07:15 AM

Hi
I was wondering if their were music players in any linux distros that play mp3 files? And if not how would one go about programming one i.e. format of files, mp3, wav, ogg vorbis etc?
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

xmms, x11amp, whatever....
I have used xmms and I had no problem with it, but I am not sure if it is descent or decent at the moment, so you'll have to wait for some more educated opinions here...

I use xmms for mp3s & streaming audio. It also has loadable gui templates.

You could also use workbone from the command line. Well, that plays cds, but there are command line mp3 players as well.

The problem is mp3 is a non-free codec, (copyright and I think patent burdened) so by default many distros have chose not to include mp3 codecs with their music players.

However those codecs exist on the internet, so pick a media player and then google
"whateverplayeryouchose mp3 support"

and you should find something.

xmms is top,but if your using ubuntu 7.04(which is not as good as I made it out to be)when you try to play an mp3 it will automatically give you the option to download the codecs needed

mpg123 is a nice little command line player which supports the mp3 format.

Are you an iTunes fan? Are you an organized person? Do you like having ultra-pre-beta software on your computer? ThenSongbird is for you.

Its open source, cross platform, and super duper. Tyler James Lee and I are great fans.

I use Rythmnbox, cause it integrates with the gnome desktop.

It has an iTunes-esque library, radio and podcast support.

Other than that I use xmms.

I use Xine as a general media player. It plays just about anything. You will need the xine-extras-nonfree package as Xine does not support patented codecs by default. If Xine doesn't work for you, I believe that vlc is a nice media player as well.

Amarok is nice, but I was sticking to players that didn't require a particular DE.

Does it require full KDE? most all KDE apps wiil run in gnome if you have qt libs and stuff, and likewise with gnome apps in kde if you have the libs.
