Corrupted file/folder.

Posted 06 June 2007 - 06:05 PM

I attempted to browse my shared folders this morning, when all of a sudden windows explorer crashed. I thought meh, it was probably a one time thing, so tried again and got the same error. Everytime I try to open the folder or do anything with it, explorer would crash.
I then came to the conclusion that I had some kind of corrupted/malicious file in there, so I opened the command prompt and tried viewing the directory contents with dir. Everytime I tried to do that, the command prompt just closed, so I tried to delete the entire folder manually and through the cmd prompt, which just crashed explorer again. I tried booting in safe mode, but that didn't return anything new either, same crashing. :(

I'm a little worried about this, does anybody have any advice on how I could delete it without formatting my drive? I'd appreciate some ideas, I'm stumped.

Regards,
Musashin.

Thanks for that seemingly pointless and flammatory comment, it doesn't seem to help with my problem though.

I think what Mr. Dille is trying to say is you may not have posted this in the right forum. So... I'll move it to the Operating System forum since it sounds like an OS type question :)

Fair enough. Maybe eLliDKraM should learn some manners.
I'm on XP SP2 by the way, but figured this would be the right section to post in. Guess not.

It's ok. I actually had the pleasure (??) of meeting Mr. Dille in person last week and I can say he's as much of an asshole in real life as he is here ;)

Dille, I mean that in the nicest way possible and you know I still love you :)

Musashin, the lounge is more for off topic, non tech type discussion.

Understood. I don't post as often as I browse here, so skimmed the sections and figured that posting in the lounge would be more appropriate than in something like Java support. I thought it was more of a 'general discussion' area.

Anyway.. does anyone have a solution or recommendation to my problem?

Have you tried moving the folder (using the command prompt) to another folder (some temp folder you set up), then deleting that?

Yep, I tried that after trying to delete the original folder, same crash. I also tried renaming and deleting, but that failed too.

I've had similar problems in the past.
Use any File Shredder to remove the Folder.

i have found most issues of this type can be fixed with the command prompt, but explorer cannot be running at the same time.

first, open a command prompt in the correct folder
hit ctrl+alt+del or ctrl+shift+esc to open the task manager, and kill explorer.exe
the command prompt should still be open, if it happened to close you'll have to load another, from task manager-> new task-> cmd.
delete the folder, or move it
hit ctrl+alt+del or ctrl+shift+esc once more and select new task from the appropriate tab
and run explorer.exe to get windows menus/taskbar back

Most often the files are somehow linked to explorer and if it is not running, there is no problem deleting it.

Try downloading Unlocker, its free and will delete any undeletable file.... Well i haven;t found one it won;t delete.
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

just install and have running in background and try to delete file/folder.
