Question. Suppose I want to install Windows 8 on another partition, and be able to dual-boot alongside Windows 7. As I am creating a partition for Windows 8, will my files on that partition be strictly on that partition or can I let both partitions access the same files?

So Windows 8 came out Friday, did anyone upgrade, if you did are you actually liking it, or do you feel it was a mistake on Microsoft's part?

I don't really care enough about it to form an opinion beyond the usual complaint that there is no start button on the desktop side.

That and the fact that it's after a good OS release, so well, I think it going to be cataloged with the 98(pre 2nd edition) ME, and Vista redheaded stepchildren that Microsoft produces. It just seems like every other OS release doesn't do very well. But, unlike ME and Vista, I will probably install this on a machine or get a machine that has it installed and give it a chance.

I agree it will probably share the same success as Vista, but it is interesting at least, a whole new way to look at Windows, even if they are trying to make the desktop work like a tablet.

I've had Win8 on an older 32bit laptop since the first early releases.
I decided to build up a new development environment for it and give it a try in the real world. Understand that everything I do, I do in a VMware virtual machine. So I have a VM for Win7 and now a VM for Win8. It makes it really easy to back up a machine, and I can boot in either OS as I like. I can also run a couple different VM's at once so I can debug into a WinXP box from my make development VM, without having to have 10 different physical PC's. I can also take the VMware file to my laptop when I go on the road and have my full desktop PC with me on the laptop without actually have to build the laptop to be the same or try to keep them sync'd. This also means only one license for each piece of software.
Mine is a multi-monitor arrangement with 2 x portrait monitors at 1200x1920, and 1 x landscape at 1920x1080.

Booting to that horrific tiles Start screen. Microsoft took away the ability to boot to the desktop with their last release candidate. But, Start8 by Stardock not only gives you a working Start button in the desktop task tray, but one of the configuration options is to boot to the desktop. I highly recommend spending the $4.99 on this! It makes Win8 a desktop PC operating system again, instead of a tablet OS running on a desktop PC.
Observation - Outlook and Safari or Chrome fight.
- I prefer Safari if only so my bookmarks sync between devices and PC's. But I notice that when Outlook and Safari are open together for more than 5 minutes the PC goes into 1/10,000 speed and for all realistic purposes is hung. The mouse moves a little, but too slow to get you out of anything and restart. So you have to hard reset the PC. The same happens with Chrome. But this doesn't happen with long sessions of Outlook and Internet Explorer open at the same time. I hate IE, but for not have to accept that this is the only way to keep the PC alive if I want to work.
- IE does have an Imports feature for importing favorites (bookmarks). So I was able to import bookmarks from Safari. So for now, I guess I delete all the favorites once a month then re-import to sync with Safari which is sync-ing through iCloud.
Observation - Taskbar:
The taskbar extends across all three monitors, but the start button and the tasktray only exist on the first monitor; so it's not a precise clone of the taskbar on all three. And each can have its own properties. I noticed that the first monitor does not group the application buttons, but the second and third monitors do.
Observation - SnagIt 11:
SnagIt works great in a VM on Windows7 but not in Windows8. As soon as you try to capture something you get the cross hairs but the screens keep blacking out, coming back, blacking out, coming back. When you finally get tire of that and hit ESCAPE, VMware workstation dumps down to one monitor and you have to reactivate the other two again, and reposition your applications.
