What's the best way to implement real-time web update using WCF?

Posted 07 November 2012 - 01:00 AM

I have been reading a lot of forums regarding the use of WCF in web, but I am really confused.

I have an existing feed server that is using WCF service. It is, with no problems, supplying real-time information to its windows applications clients. What i would like to do is to have a web application to subscribe to the feeds that i am supplying to the windows application clients.

I would like to know if there is an equivalent for the callback function in web development. I will be using flash to display my feed in the browser. But i still not sure on what other web languages is best to use to be compatible with the WCF service.

Thanks in advance.

It's not possible to use the callback feature of WCF with web development. The only way I have found to implement this feature is to use an ajax type call to see if anything has updated.

Although if anyone has any other suggestions I would love to head it to improve some of the things I am working on.

Most WCF based services are REST-ful. You can do the same REST queries to get the data.

You also need to accept that its in the internet: There is no such thing as 'real time'. There are just too many pieces in between you and the server. But you can get information within a couple seconds. 'Real time' is a relative term. For some industries a couple seconds is forever and not considered real time.

Not necessarily. There's lots of work being done to do full two-way communication via web. For instance, in HTML 5, there's an API added called WebSockets that allows for just that. It's about as real-time as any other system that's separated by different networks.

Here's a framework that's really getting popular now.

Async library for .NET to help build real-time, multi-user interactive web applications.

Here's where you should get started:

https://github.com/S...lR/SignalR/wiki

It's a whole new ballgame, so it's unlikely you'll be able to use your existing codebase, but if you need realtime web interactivity, this is where to start.

Here's an example application being built with SignalR:

It's an HTML-based multiplayer game, that runs realtime in your browser.

Was just coming to post about SignalR. One of my co worker that I work with mentioned trying it out, gave it a go and it works perfectly for what we want.

I have also used SignalR and would recommend using it for "real-time" communications.
