Upgrading Firefox in Damn Small Linux(Hard Drive Install)

Posted 30 June 2007 - 04:08 PM

My hubby - bless him - is attempting to run DSL on our dinosaur of a laptop (Gateway 2500, 233 mhz intel processor, 282 mb ram) and cannot figure out how to upgrade the current browser (Firefox)
He has downloaded and un-tar'd the new version. Upon install, some of the old files are overwritten, but neither version - old or new - will open.

Where are we supposed to put the new file and what is the best way to install/open it?

Thanks guys!! :D

I believe it would be best to try the UCI package manager. It was a forerunner to Klik. You can try "apt-get upgrade firefox" from the command line but from what I've read about DSL I wouldn't suggest it. From what I already knew about apt-get upgrade is that it sometimes breaks other packages. What I read about apt-get with DSL is that it can possibly break the entire OS.

If you think about it, the higher up you go on the version number of Firefox. (Or most browsers) the more RAM is going to be drained. If you upgrade to a version like 2.0, that takes 2-3 times more RAM than Firefox 1.0, your computer is going to crawl. You choose DSL for a reason. The hardware is older and cannot push enough to handle a larger, or more modern OS. If you choose to start upgrading a lot of packages like this you probably soon find yourself just as bogged down as if you had put Xp, Fedora, or whatever.. on it.

If your really trying to get a more robust system on a small box like that I would recommend Slax. Your box should have enough RAM to handle that. There a couple different versions of it. All of them are a miniature version of Slackware, but I think all of them have more bells and whistles than DSL. It's a liveCD too, I would check that out.

Thanks, I'll have him try that. The version of Firefox that downloaded with this version of DSL is one of the earlier ones - apparently it has been acting buggy for him. MY solution is to replace the laptop :hehe:

You guys are awesome!! I'm so glad I found this forum. :^:
