As for Director sites, Director has a very strong following, and always has. Much stronger (but not bigger) than Flash. There are TONS of sites, Macromedia even keeps a list of good ones some where on their massive site, but here are some I have found:
http://www.mcli.dist...a.edu/director/
http://www.sci.sdsu..../workshops/dir/
http://www.multimediahelp.8m.com/
^^ All off the front page of google, but they all have links to even more sites.
There's tons of help if you look for it all.
BTW, the band The Gorlliaz, aren't actually a band, they are a cartoon and their amazing website was started 1.5 ago and it was done in director. www.gorillaz.com Check that out.

another great site... navigation wise is http://www.nsxbyacura.com/
i don't think it's director itself that draws people to it. it's what director itself can control that makes it so powerful. it's crap for drawing and really animating... but what it does allow is for inserting say... a quicktime movie and allowing you to control when it plays pauses and rewind or whatever without any user intervention. you can think of director as a movie studio more than anything else. flash is sort of set up like it, but what you call symbols in flash are cast members in director. it's all based on a "movie" theme.
from the class i took... depending on your uses... you can make kick ass animated menues for CDs (viewsonic does this for diver installs) you can make presentations (better than powerpoint) and also package multiple multimedia elements for the web.
but, design an entire site in director you will not. i mean you can... but why would you really want to when flash works so much better at that sort of thing? i will give director one thing. lingo (director's language like action script) is a much friendlier language to learn and use than flash's action script. AS can be a bear to master for a newbie. lingo is almost almost plain english... compared to other languages.
i really don't understand the price of it. maybe for the rights to control all the stuff it controls... but... whatever.

Director is not very good for drawing in, but why would you want to draw in it anyway? That's what Illustrator and Freehand and Photoshop are for. Director is used ALOT for interative CD-Roms. And like Vetritus said, It's amazing for bringing together, Photographs, Flash, Quicktime movies, and putting them all together and makeing them work together. If anyone doesn't know what Communication Arts is, go to Barnes and Nobel and buy one today. It's the primeire Art magazine and everyyear they make a CDrom with the years best work in it and they are amazing.
I disagree with one thing though Vetritus, You can make a full site in Director. It's really not that hard, just depends on what kind of site you want to make. It's better for somethings than others, Flash is better for somethings than others.
