Director

Posted 05 November 2001 - 09:52 AM

Looking for tutorials in director.  Is there anyone out there that uses it?  Or possibly could post some tut's on it?  Or knows of a good site for that?  Other than macromedia?

i've got the million page 50 hour teach yourself book from macromedia on it.  it's really good.  it's straight forward... and it'll teach ya just about everything you need to know... or would want to know.  too bad you're in WA or i'd let ya borrow it.

cuz i don't like director.  it's powerful... but the interface is archaic.  i don't like switching between the smooth Adobe rip-off look flash has and switching to that crappy director interface.  i learned it.  i know how to use it.  played with it a couple times... now it's not even installed.

what do you want to play with director?

well, i would go with flash if i was you, director, shockwave is just kinda "blah" when flash does things that look better (from the stuff ive seen) and smaller files..

Director and Flash are like Uncle to Nephew.  They are kinda in the same family, but not really, and one is about 10x as more powerful than the other. If you want to do a cool looking website, use flash, if you want to make and tie a kick ass frontend to a complicated backend, make games, use bitmap images, or do anything really really complicated, Director is the way to go.

As for Director sites, Director has a very strong following, and always has. Much stronger (but not bigger) than Flash.  There are TONS of sites, Macromedia even keeps a list of good ones some where on their massive site, but here are some I have found:
http://www.mcli.dist...a.edu/director/
http://www.sci.sdsu..../workshops/dir/
http://www.multimediahelp.8m.com/

^^ All off the front page of google, but they all have links to even more sites.
There's tons of help if you look for it all.

BTW, the band The Gorlliaz, aren't actually a band, they are a cartoon and their amazing website was started 1.5 ago and it was done in director.  www.gorillaz.com Check that out.

right on Neoracle
another great site... navigation wise is http://www.nsxbyacura.com/

i don't think it's director itself that draws people to it.  it's what director itself can control that makes it so powerful.  it's crap for drawing and really animating... but what it does allow is for inserting say... a quicktime movie and allowing you to control when it plays pauses and rewind or whatever without any user intervention.  you can think of director as a movie studio more than anything else.  flash is sort of set up like it, but what you call symbols in flash are cast members in director.  it's all based on a "movie" theme.
from the class i took... depending on your uses... you can make kick ass animated menues for CDs (viewsonic does this for diver installs) you can make presentations (better than powerpoint) and also package multiple multimedia elements for the web.
but, design an entire site in director you will not.  i mean you can... but why would you really want to when flash works so much better at that sort of thing?  i will give director one thing.  lingo (director's language like action script) is a much friendlier language to learn and use than flash's action script.  AS can be a bear to master for a newbie.  lingo is almost almost plain english... compared to other languages.

i really don't understand the price of it.  maybe for the rights to control all the stuff it controls... but... whatever.

Yup, Vetritus is pretty much right on the money.

Director is not very good for drawing in, but why would you want to draw in it anyway?  That's what Illustrator and Freehand and Photoshop are for.  Director is used ALOT for interative CD-Roms.   And like Vetritus said, It's amazing for bringing together, Photographs, Flash, Quicktime movies, and putting them all together and makeing them work together.  If anyone doesn't know what Communication Arts is, go to Barnes and Nobel and buy one today. It's the primeire Art magazine and everyyear they make a CDrom with the years best work in it and they are amazing.

I disagree with one thing though Vetritus, You can make a full site in Director. It's really not that hard, just depends on what kind of site you want to make.  It's better for somethings than others, Flash is better for somethings than others.

ok... i'll give you that.  you CAN make a site in it.  but it's not the kind of site i'd want.  i'd make an interface... i'd make a cartoon.  but not a whole site.  wouldn't want to piss myself off with the limitations of director.  ie. drawing... and stuff.

ummm okay now that all of you have ranted and raved or what ever it was...the bottom line is that some people use it...and DIC doesn't have tutorials on it.  Now if I myself new Director...I would make tutorials on it.  Someone get off their ass and hook us up!
