change dns and email stops working

Posted 24 November 2012 - 05:57 AM

I have this situation.

One website is hosted by the company X.
The domain was purchased in the company Y.
I send the dns of the server where my website is hosted by company X to the company Y.

After this change I received a call by the owner of the website that is saying they no longer receive emails. The email is related to the company Y.

This situation apparently occurs after the dns change.

What is happening? There is something wrong? I never had a problem like this.

You have a hosting package setup on company Y right? Have you also setup the email accounts on company Y? From what I understand of your situation when someone tries to use their email address with company X, dns would direct them to company Y and attempt to check an email box there. So if you don't have one setup there, they won't get their email.

Also keep in mind that when you switch over DNS it can take awhile for it to propagate through the system. Sometimes as long as 24 hours.

If you plan on staying with company X for hosting, your domain on company Y should have its Domain name servers pointing to company X.

If this is not the situation, please clarify more about what is setup on company Y.
