Hey Everybody,
I was just curious if you could download a file from a remote router and than transfer that file to your computer? I had this idea today and wanted to see if it was even possible.

Routers don't have a file system that they offer for access to pcs. Normally a router will have a web-interface that allows for download of the configuration file, but unless one has flashed their router with something like DD-WRT that allows for a Linux (or alternative to manufacturer installed) Operating System, then there is no access granted to the files.
It's one of those situations where if you knew what you needed, you'd probably know how to get it. Also I would think that firmware per router is proprietary to the manufacturer, & the flash/boot image would be closed source written by the manufacturer, or whoever they contract that out to.

Okay that makes sense. I will just settle for remoting into another computer and using that IP to download a file and than transfer the file over.
I think it would be neat if a router could act in that way though so that way you could access and download a file without having a computer on that network.

Okay I'll take a look into it. I figured that the hardware wouldn't work, but I figured I would just throw it out there to see if anyone else knew how to do it..
Thanks for the answer!

technically speaking, you could port foward the ports for FTP or http to a internal server, and then connecting to the router would redirect you as it were, to those server, for ftp or http. It would be a bit simpler than remoting to a computer behind the router (as you'd have to setup port forwarding for that as well, depending on implementation)

Remoting in does seem easier especially for the case of downloading files that will not have the same address every time.

Nerdwin, if you are concerned about your address changing, look into either manually assigning your ip a dns name, or using a dynamic dns service.

Maybe if we had a better view of the overall problem, we can provide a simpler solution.

Hmm Well I was looking to download from a website online. Downloading from this website brings up my schools firewall. I had the thought of just remoting into my home computer to go around that firewall and just transfer the files over once they've been downloaded. After that I just had the crazy idea of well bypassing the remoting into a computer and just going straight into the router itself.
I was kind of just asking if that's even possible?

Yikes.
When it comes to school firewalls our stance is that they are there for a reason.
If you need to get something that is being blocked, you would have to ask your school administration. Anything we've suggested here you won't have access to.
