Hi-de-ho!

Posted 17 July 2007 - 02:46 AM

Hello everyone. I'm Muso, and I'm a geek...

I've just been lurking for a week or two here. I have noticed an abundance of daft homework questions, but on the whole it looks a great site.

Anyway, a little background: I'm (just) old enough to have been addicted to Chuckie Egg, Elite and Repton, and started programming around the same time (in BBC BASIC). Since then I've written (non-commercial) games for the Acorn Electron, Amiga and DOS, applications for Windows, and have used a variety of languages. More recently I have been involved with website development and scripting, but really want to get back to basics and find some C++ projects to work on.

I've also recently adopted Ubuntu, and I think I might like to work on something cross-platform (and open source).

I've dabbled in C, and C derivatives, but I'm here in the hope that it helps me with a more rounded understanding, and to glean more of a feeling for standard practices (e.g. versioning (RCS), commenting, debugging and programming practices - particularly use of pointers, linked lists, allocating memory and diagnosing memory leaks, stack overflows, etc).

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Thanks :)

Is there a reason I can't write PMs or Emails? I tried sending one, but was denied (I was just wanting to make a (hopefully constructive) comment about the site).

Hi muso welcome to dream in code and yes there is a reason that you can't PM and that reason is that you have to have 10 posts or more to PM someone.

That restriction aside (it is in place to prevent abuse by new members), please feel free to post your suggestions in the Site Feedback forum. :)

We are always open to suggestions from members.

Ah, that makes sense! Thanks for the welcome guys. I might start to really like this place after all :D

btw, the reason I was going to PM, rather than post in the forum was that I wanted to criticise one or two comments in the snippets (C++) section... while they might have been correct observations, they were neither constructive nor helpful or encouraging to the individual posting the snippet. In other words, I don't really want to make a public complaint about a person or people here, without knowing the history or politics involved.

I like to think that the community is broad enough that any sort of constructive criticism would be accepted. As with any community, you'll always run into some individuals that may take issue with what you have to say, but that should by no means inhibit you from saying it. I feel that any member may have valuable insight, and should feel free to offer it. The mods and admins of the site are committed to evaluating such feedback objectively.

As an FYI, the snippets section will likely be undergoing to tweaking in the near future to raise it's value to our members.

I can understand not wanting to open your tenure with public criticism however...with only a few more posts, please feel free to PM myself or another team member...or you could add me to your IM client, and contact me with regards to this.

Thanks,
