XP, XP....*tisk, tisk*

Posted 03 November 2001 - 08:20 PM

I build a new computer, and bought XP.  Worked fine for a few days, then suddenly restarted in the middle of my work.  Next thing i know i'm getting memory errors, and i've formated my HD.  And then i'm still unable to install XP, so i had to get my whole computer replaced.  (Just went to the store today and got docked 25$ for 'restocking'.)  i have to wait longer cause they don't have my parts.  :(

XP got on my wrong side from the beginning....so it better shape up to what i expected it to be, or else......hehehehe :D J/K

sounds like a stop error of death.  that'll cause the reboot.  better to set it to not reboot on stop errors.  that way you can get the error and look it up on the M$ site.  it'll actually TELL you what happened.  memory errors like ummm... the memory at XXXxXXXXXX referenced XXXxXXXXX the memory could not be written/read?  that kinda memory error?  those are usually cause by poorly written programs or dmaged .dll files.  i ran into this when i horked a logonui.exe file i was working on... also when i was beta testing QuickBooks 2002.  most likely you ran a non Xp crtified application and it hiccuped.  try running it in compatibility mode for the OS it was designed for.  also speaking of compatibility... there's a nifty tool on the Xp CD.  in supporttools called ACT20  it's the complete app compatibility tool set.  check that sucker out.

then again you could have had a serious hardware problem...  just hope you didn't replace your system for a software problem.

nope...
i formated my HD and i still got that problem, so i was guessing that either the memory bured out or something got shorted on the MB.

was it that problem?  that memory cannot be written/read?  cause that IS pure software.

yup...i think the memory burning out was a problem.  they said it might have been cause of XP.  (NOT SURE HOW FAR THAT'S TRUE, but they said it uses a lot of system resources, expecially memory.)

aaaaah....who cares, they are replacing the parts...so we'll see how it goes after that :D

XP causing memory failure?? um think they're full of it.  Obviously you can't blame XP for this one.  What brand of system do you have?

me thinks it's a home build... i don't think a M$ partner in the Xp launch would dare let a tech talk bad a microsoft product... much less blame it for a system failure.  Xp wouldn't be sold if it did this.  i'd sue the f---ers if they f---ed me like that!  i don't care how much i love 'em.

Hrm, well I have had only one problem with XP and it's not too bad. Every once in awhile, if im running a couple programs at once my programs will lock up and my mouse will dissappear, but windows is still running. The programs i am running I never had problems with before, but agian, its no big deal ;).

well, what ever the problem was it'll hopefully get fixed.  i told then not to replace the system.  so, they gave me store credit.  this way i'll want for a system with the 'xp seal of approval' :D

that way if something goes wrong, i can go and b!tch at the story and not blame anyone else.

thanx for the responses though
