Snippets

Posted 18 July 2007 - 07:44 AM

I have through many of the snippets, and there were one or two that had disparaging remarks. There were others, but this is the last one I went to:

http://www.dreaminco.../snippet736.htm

Sure, the code could be more elegant, but comments like this: "Another piece of shit" don't serve to encourage the individual posting them, nor do they show how the code could be improved.

This, and the fact that the comment has been there since last year made me a little cautious about joining (I am a member of other forums, and the moderators have always been hot on stuff like this...)

With this in mind, I hope you don't mind me making a couple of suggestions:

1. Perhaps a star rating could be encouraged instead of anonymous flames, and snippets with numerous low ratings could then be considered for change or removal.
2. Could there be an option to "report a comment" - then something like this may not be left for so long?

On another note (and a more pedantic one), shouldn't snippets be quite short? There are a couple of quite long programs that, while sometimes really good, aren't simple cut-and-paste snippets of code that can be put anywhere. To me, these would be best placed in a separate section. This would also mean that any minor tweaks to snippets could be made more easily as you wouldn't be trawling through code to make a change.

Other than that, the site looks really cool (in spite of the orange :P ), and I really like the way it's organised on the whole.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I will take care of this shortly. We do encourage constructive criticism of code but with over 900 snippets, we do not moderate all comments.

I like this idea and will add it to my list of things-to-code.

This is an easy addition and a good one. I'll add it the next time I'm tweaking the snippets area.

We agree snippets should be reusable pieces of short code that address a specific problem or provide specific functionality that can be "dropped" in to an existing program. Our moderators do monitor these and often delete non-snippets but we don't get them all so if you see ones that aren't snippets feel free to bring them to our attention by PM'ing one of the staff members (Click About Us for a full list) or starting a thread like this.

I think that started with the thought: "where the **** do I find an orange car?" (pic hunt thread) ;)

I'm glad you decided to post here after all - your suggestions have a great deal of merit. As I mentioned previously (and reiterated by skyhawk), there are several tweaks planned for the snippets section, and i believe one of those will be a review process similar to the tutorials. With more governance around the validation and submission of snippets (which i fully agree should be copy 'n' paste solutions to common problems), the section will increase in value to our members.

Ok, I try to go though the snippets, but there are a lot of them, and there is little way to a) know which ones I have reviewed already, b) know which ones are new.

In the forums I can sort my views in all kinds of ways, for example I can view the newest posts or I can look at the most viewed posts etc. I can view tutorials in alphabetical order to find subjects, or I can view them by user etc. But no such luck with snippets. The best I can do is search. I would LOVE to see a better interface to the snippets section.

(I know what skyhawk is thinking: "Great, why the hell don't YOU write one then!" )

:) I'm working on improving the interface, probably won't be near what you want, but we'll see ;)

I'm going to try and at least add an admin section for the team.

the more comments there are on snippets the more the site will have better opinions about them. Thus if it is an overwhelming negative something can be done to remove or fix it.
