FIRST THREAD

Posted 02 September 2001 - 09:43 PM

WOW i had the first thread... aren't i special...

if any one has any questions on 2k or Xp (other than the question i asked) i can pretty much find out as well.  i work tech support to Gateway as i may have mentioned earlier so i can find just about anything out on ANY M$ OS.  of course Xp isn't in the M$ knowlegebase but i'm not afraid to crash my system in an effort to figure out if Xp can or cannot do something.  scary huh?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

so then i suppose we qualify to answer the Win95 questions too... as we still run 95 here at work.  BTW... 95 is hands down the fastest OS M$ has officially put out to date.  that was said for all you people who are chomping at the bit to knock Win95 (notice i didn't say it was the best at allocating resources... what can you say about resource handling when your OS loads itself into the top of the memory stack with a peak at 64MB then works down... hmmm...)

Oh yeah, I almost completely forgot about those "other" OS.  But who understands those "other" OS's anyway.

Actually I've got way too much information at my disposal for this statement to hold water.  Let's bring on all the OS crap that happens out there....BRING IT ON!

I bet there isn't a one of you out there that can stump us with an OS question...

ok Silver... why don't you tell the class where to manually disable the TSRs (Terminate and Stay Resident applications) in the registry... or how about how to setup file and printer sharing between computers one running Win98 the other Running Win2kPro... i don't want have to type in a password when accessing the 2k system either... tackle that one bro...

Well, ok Mr. Rose.

Theres a great little program called msconfig, when typed in the run box of Windows 98,SE,ME, & XP allows you to turn on and off what are called startup items in the, ironically, "StartUp Tab." oooooo

And the registry key naturally regview isn't allowing me to copy the registry key to clipboard and dang...will these people quit calling for help it takes forever to write this...arg...explorer has caused a GPF in module gdi.exe
I hate this...

Ok, now I get to type it out....
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

this is the same list you'll see in msconfig however this registry key holds true for all M$ OS's

Christ it took this lady forever to get to safe mode...ugh!

I do use 2k on occassion, but the majority of my time is spent on linux. If you use KDE with linux then it does come with the Konqueror web browser. It works a lot like IE in that it allows a person to go through the file system creating and deleting files/folders as needed. It also does a pretty good job on the web. Only problem that I have with it is that I have yet to find a plugin that would allow me to view pages that have active-x controls. (#### Microshaft proprietary stuff anyway)

too bad you're going to see a lot more of that now that IE5.5SP2 and 6 have done away totally with support for legacy netscape plugin scripting... i cite as an example Apple's Quicktime.

And to not login in w2k take out the check in the checkbox for "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer." In users and Passwords in Control Panel.

That one was easy..

or you could add "Everyone" to your list of users/groups  in the sharing tab... or was it the permissions tab... hmmm... or simply add the user to your computer... adn give them permission.  that would be a bit more secure...
