I remember Friday as a good read, though I'm not sure the content has held up so well. I think that cover shot is a good metaphor - it's actually an interesting and in its time somewhat progressive riff on the classic "space bikini" cover, but in 2018 it's hard to not have some real reservations about the fact that, well, you're selling this book with a picture of a girl who's kind of falling out of her spacesuit.

*shrug* It's an early 80's book cover. Not going to get worked up over it.

*interpretive dance expressing amused detachment* I mostly think of it because the girlfiend has sensitized me to the cover art on the '80s low-rent SF paperbacks.

*sagely nodding* Yup.. them were the days when books were sometimes judged best by their covers.

Just want to note in passing a passing of note: Harlan Ellison Dies at 84
Truly one of the most aggravating people and one of the most amazing writers of the 20th century.

For the last several months (maybe a year), I've been coming home from work at night, getting dinner on the table (usually with help from the hubs or the firstborn), eating, clearing the table and loading the dishwasher (side note: a dishwasher is the key to a happy marriage... that, and not having kids. I really recommend skipping the whole kid thing. Just get a dog and call it a day), and proceeding to pass out in the recliner until hubs wakes me up at 10:00 to go to bed. Reading time has been thoroughly nonexistent - I'm only halfway through American Gods and I started it last August. So I've decided to give audio books a try. I've never listened to one before, but given that my round trip commute is 3-4 hours every damned day, I could get a lot of ear reading done if it turns out to be something I enjoy. And I have the entire catalog of two major universities at my disposal for free. So yeah.... here's hoping!

FYI - all the issues of Compute! Magazine are available for free download. Perhaps for those long commutes.

Just finished Altered Carbon, by Richard Morgan. Like Blade Runner, it's a pretty competent take on a Chandler novel, but with enough science fiction window dressing to give the author a bit of room to play. Most of the science is magic, but the cops are still cops and the detective is still a battered vet too young to be this jaded and still trying to hold on to the few scruples he has left.
I wouldn't call it one of the Great Works, but it's a reasonably entertaining read.

I have discovered that I absolutely love audio books. I truly didn't think I'd enjoy them, but I find myself looking forward to my absurd commute just to get in more story time. I am able to complete a 10-hour book per week. I could do more if I brought headphones to listen on the bus, but frankly I prefer to nap on public transport - you can't smell it if you're unconscious.
