About 1/4 the way through my Wheel of Time Reread. I paused to start Discworld. Right now reading the Rithmatist, then on to a quick reread of the Dresden Files in prep for the next book, then back to WoT.

Rithmatist was a great book, but I've not read it in some time. I still need to buy a copy of memory of Light before I start my WoT readthrough. I'm expecting it'll take quite a while though :)/>

Currently reading Choices of One by Timothy Zahn. It's another of his Mara Jade books, set way before Heir to the Empire.

I love WoT, haven't got all the books unfortunately though. The library where i USED to live had all of them (owner was a fan) and I read them all a while ago. Since coming back home I've bought the latest as they came out though.

Darn shame that Robert Jordan passed away though...

Moved to the third Bob Howard/Laundry book in the series: "The Fuller Memorandum". So far I enjoy the series.

Also guessing you're an Eddings fan :)

I first read Eye of the World around 10-15 years ago, and have been waiting patiently for the last half dozen books to be released. Now Memory of Light is the last one I'm missing, but as soon as I have it, I'll be starting the year-long reread.

You are right. It is a damn shame Jordan died, although I will say that because of that, I am now a fan of Brandon Sanderson, and have been off hunting down some of his books since reading the end of WoT from the library.

My stack keeps growing and growing and growing. It sucks that my kids quit playing soccer last year - soccer season was momma's reading season (6+ hours/week sitting at the soccer field * 4 months == 96+ hours of uninterrupted reading). I'm going to have to start making time to read now.

What I can remember of my stack, off the top of my head:

Seriously Kidding, Ellen Degeneres
Brisingr, Christopher Paolini
Inheritance, Christopher Paolini
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Steig Larson
The Exile, Allan Folsom
The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neil Gaiman
Dodger, Terry Pratchett
SharePoint 2013 for Dummies, Ken Withee
SharePoint 2013 Plain & Simple, Lightfoot/Lopez/Metger
Professional Ruby on Rails, Noel Rappin
Focal Point, Brian Tracy

Brisingr and Inheritance were both good.

Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is one of those books I keep meaning to pick up, but never remember about it when I'm out in bookshops. And I bet Seriously Kidding is funny.

Yea it is a shame about Jordan. However, the project moving to Brandon Sanderson breathed new life into the series. Jordan's writing was dry and dragged on at the end. When Sanderson dove in, he was careful to emulate the style of Jordan without parodying it, and he did a good job, but he also incorporated his own style. The transition is barely noticable, but the pace of the series really picks up because the focus shifts from dresses and teacups to characters and dialogue.

I was fortunate(ish) enough to have not gotten into the series until only a few years ago. My roommate at the time hands me Eye of the World and says, "You'll love this." He was right. The Gathering Storm came out a week before I finished Knife of Dreams.

After reading TGS I went out and bought Mistborn. I was impressed. So I picked up Elantris, then Warbreaker, and so forth. Brandon Sanderson is easily my favorite author now, but I likely wouldn't have discovered him if not for his work on the Wheel of Time.

Oddly enough, I haven't been reading a lot of fiction in the last few months. There's plenty to read - a collection of Alice Munro stories, the new Paul Auster, a few science fiction novels, and so forth - but I'm just not really in a fiction frame of mind lately. That said, I did finish John Crowley's Four Freedoms about a week ago. That was really quite good. John Crowley is unjustly underrated, if you ask me.

You would be right on the Eddings fan part, how ever did you guess :hehe:

I'd actually read some Brandon Sanderson before I heard about him being asked to carry on the WoT series. I'd recommend his Mistborn Trilogy, as well as the other books set in that universe.

I enjoyed the Inheritance Cycle, but content wise it just wasn't that good. It was quite literally a mix of Star Wars, LoTR, and some of Dune. Something to read, but I wouldn't put in in my top 10 (or 50)

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is actually rather good. I read it after the hype with some trepidation, since mostly these things don't live up to their fame, but I was pleasantly surprised. It also flows rather well especially considering it wasn't originally written in English.

Anything by Terry Pratchett has my vote. Man's a comedic god.

Well, that's an odd word to choose for a staunch atheist. Maybe you could just say he's "very, very funny indeed" and leave the spirit world out of it?

In this context I used it as "a being whose talent for comedy approaches that typically ascribed to only being available to a god". Didn't think much of using the phrase beyond it's it's typical (or my) meaning.

But I concede the point that it may be a contradiction in terms.

I would have used the word genius myself as I tend to avoid labeling anything other than Google a god.

I guess in order to know if god is appropriate, do we worship him or generally blame him for the Disc?
