DVI-D Switch Suggestions
Posted 03 August 2007 - 06:45 AM
Question: Is there a product that will allow me to hook both my PC and PS3 into my monitor through DVI connection and still keep the 1080p resolution? I've seen like 1 or 2 that will allow this (I think they are called KVM switches?) but only allow like 1024*768 resolution and I would rather not pay $200 for something that won't do 1080p.
- I could do a DVI->VGA adapter and get a VGA switch if they exist as well but I am not that knowledgable in this area. Main thing is i want to keep 1080p! I'm thinking this would be a cheaper route if it exists?

ive been looking for one of these switches that will let me keep my monitors native resolution.. its a 22" so it maxes out the resolution. the think is, those KVM wont do beyond their limit... and they are somewhat limited if you dont spend the money... if you go DVI to VGA wont you lose that HDCP thing and cause the movies not to play?

I don't THINK you should lose HDCP because my 360 is hooked up by VGA cables and I can get 1080p through that. $200 for a switch like that is rediculous though. Ive been looking around and you can get a VGA switch w/ a max resolution of way over 1080p for $30 max. So basically i'd be going HDMI to DVI-D cable ->VGA adapter -> switch
this way i'd have my 360 and my ps3 on a vga switch ... i have a wii but i use component cables because you don't get any huge increase in resolution w/ component cables anyways.

Those are all HDMI switches.. I would need a DVI switch which I did not see on the site. They do have splitters but you can't connect 2 input devices (which would be my PC and PS3) to 1 output device (monitor). I think I am stuck just plugging and unplugging the 2 DVI cables which is no biggy to save $200

damn you ups!!! I usually just leave them a note on the door to drop it at the neighbors or something if i'm unable to snag it.. they are usually pretty good about it (unless you live in a not so trustworthy place)...
I ordered 1 hdmi cable, 1 dvi->hdmi cable and 1 2 port hdmi (1080p) switch... gonna try to go from monitor to switch with dvi to hdmi then hook up the pc and then pc to switch using dvi-hdmi.. gonna have all sorts of damn cables going everywhere (may post pics ha).. lemme know how they work out though im curious

Nice.. mine comes in today.. I just got the big cables myself since they were so cheap (better safe than sorry) i'll post some pics as well before i have to pack it up to head back to school.
*UPDATE*
Recieved my stuff... really impressed w/ the look and feel of the stuff from monoprice (even packaging was excellent... although the plastic around the switch box smelled pretty funny when i took it off).. the switch doesn't feel flimsy at all and the cables seem to be great as well (it all works at least!) My only dislike about what i got is that the switch has a red blinking light that indicates which signal is "on" rather than a steady light which can be somewhat distracting at times.
