Linux distro's

Posted 20 November 2001 - 11:08 PM

If you're going to run a dual boot system and you want the best of two worlds (linux and windows) would the fact that you'll be running windows effect you choice of a Linux distro

In other words if you like Mandrake because its more "user friendly" then Slackware would you still want to run Mandrake for that reason if your gonna run windows as well (b/c windows is more user friendly than any linux distro out there)

note: this post was majorly reworked based on LeprechauN's comment. hope it makes more sense now :)

your choice of linux distro should prolly have more to do w/how much & how fast you're willing to learn.  any of them will work, you just need to find the level of user-friendly you're looking for (which isn't slaskware).  redhat is prolly the best 'true linux' coming from windows, but like anything linux its all opinion (& likely to start wars!)

personally, i'd recommend BeOS. Most of its terminal commands are the same as linux (Bourne Again Shell), alot of the programs are the same with the added bonus(es) of the 'window' environment being built into the OS (not XWindows) and it comes Windows agnositc (when you install r5, it puts a 'Start BeOS 5' icon on your Windows desktop; no need for system commander).  Even with all the problems Be Inc. has had recently, I'd still recommend their product anyday (####, I've been using it since r4).
