But the secretary's 7-year-old daughter will be staring at me all afternoon. Because I'm cool and my office has fun toys. And then she'll complain that she's bored and shit. Because it's obviously my job to entertain her like a friggin dancing monkey.

You see it's all in how you look at the matter. Where you're seeing "secretary's 7-year-old daughter", I'm picturing "B9's new intern".

My stepmom runs a taxi company and when I was little she would have me help her do tickets for records. To me it was fun and I got to help the stepmom. Make her do some work, even if it's grabbing paper off the printer. :P

Exactly. When I was a kid, my mom started a little catering business. I did a lot of prep work for her, it was great. (yes, I had knife skills when I was like eight years old)

I just cut the load time for our project list from around 60 seconds to less than 10 seconds. We've always blamed the fact that the active directory utility (that builds permissions IDs out of group memberships) has to reach out to other offices in other cities (and states), which we cannot fix. Besides, the users complaining about it are the same ones who think that development controls whether or not external, non-work-related sites are up, and who have asked us to make exceptions in our corporate web filtering for other non-work-related sites, for personal use. So we generally just say "no can fixie" and close their tickets. However, we ran SQL profiler this morning and discovered that the bottleneck was occuring from not 1 but 2 inner joins to the same activity log file. The log is there so the DMS knows which projects a user is working on, so that those projects float to the top of the list. However, apparently there was no logic to clean the table up: there were over 10,000,000 records. Cleaned the table up, and load time dropped. I win.

Now I just need to write an inordinately complicated email full of terms that said users won't understand so that they don't think that EVERY problem we've labled unfixable is actually an easy fix... (note to self: use the word inordinately in the email)

I am in an overly chipper mood. Pops got three tickets for last nights CWS game.. stellar evening.. a long evening.. wee bit sun burnt... and an odd dinner of braut, snow cone, and funnel cake (later layered with beer). Our main Exchange guy crept over to my cube to tell me they moved the Exchange box and the hard drive died.. and that if, maybe, possibly, and not angrily, if I could get a list of all the folks for our 'bad shit is happening' email list. I smiled and said not a problem.. which I think confused him.. but life is good.

Busy, busy day today.

Helping a co-worker come up with a design for his custom tap handles (and trying to keep him from totally wrecking the design that a friend of mine made for him). Trying to figure out enough VB to do a totally simple task that I could do in thirty seconds in a real language.

Probably will come up with some other stuff to fill up the rest of the day. (Must book tickets for California trip next month)

Tomorrow - off to New York to visit with friends for the weekend.

My day started off shitty. Turned good. Then back to shitty. And now, for some unknown reason (maybe just because tomorrow is Friday), I'm very optimistic for the remainder of the day. Content, even. Almost... happy.

It HAS to be because tomorrow is Friday. There is no other reasonable explanation.

Bah. There is never a reasonable explanation for optimism.

That's the point of optimism, isn't it?
